The Greyhounds from Eaton Rapids and the Raiders from Portland have just completed the first game of their doubleheader and are taking a dinner break. Here is the play by play of the first game!

Let’s take a look at the starting lineups for each team. In this game, Portland will bat first despite hosting the game. Eaton Rapids will bat last.

It is now time to look through the events of this game through the blurred perspective of an aging Bleacher Denizen who delighted umpires and catchers with breezes generated by his futile swings at the ball in the days of yore when he attempted to play.
Kayleigh DeShais retired the three Portland hitters in the first inning on a strikeout, a groundout to shortstop and a popup to the pitcher.
Cadence McQuirt tripled to the right field fence to lead off the bottom of the first inning for Eaton Rapids. Zoe Alvarez sent her home on a groundout to the pitcher. Jayden Townsend retired the next hitter on a grounder to the shortstop. Flora Steien doubled to left field. The next Greyhound batter was out on a grounder to shortstop to end the inning.
Eaton Rapids scored one run in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.
Jayden Townsend beat out an infield single to lead off the top of the second inning for Portland. Jayden Townsend stole second base and moved on to third on a throwing error. Autumn Reffitt blooped a single to right field to drive in Jayden Townsend. Kayleigh DeShais struck out the next batter. Ann Morris doubled to the centerfield fence to move Autumn Reffitt up to third base. Kayleigh DeShais struck out the next batter and got the final out of the inning on a grounder to shortstop.
Portland scored one run in the top of the second inning to tie the game at 1-1.
Jayden Townsend retired the first two Greyhound batters in the bottom of the second inning on a grounder to first and a fly to third base. Eden Daughenbaugh drew a walk. Eaton Rapids made the final out of the second inning on a fly to left field.
Bella VanAlstine walked to lead off the third inning for Portland. Eaton Rapids Catcher Zoe Alvarez made a strong throw to second base to catch the runner trying to steal. Kayleigh DeShais struck out the next batter. Bailee Fish singled to short center field. Kayleigh DeShais struck out the next hitter to end the inning.
Cadence McQuirt singled to centerfield to lead off the bottom of the third inning for the Greyhounds. She advanced to second base when Zoe Alvarez lined a single to centerfield. Cadence McQuirt was tagged out on her way to third when Brooke DePeel hit a fielder’s choice grounder to the shortstop. Zoe Alvarez made it to third on the play when there was a throwing error.
Brooke DePeel stole second base. Flora Steien bounced a single to left field. Zoe Alvarez scored on the play and Brooke DePeel advanced to third base. Flora Steien went to second base on the throw to home. Hailey DePeel singled to short right field to drive in Brooke DePeel. Flora Steien advanced to third base. Hailey DePeel stole second base. Flora Steien was out at home and Hailey DePeel was safe at third on Ella Patrick’s fielder’s choice grounder to the pitcher. Ella Patrick stole second base. Jayden Townsend struck out the next batter to end the inning.
Eaton Rapids scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 3-1 lead.
Kayleigh DeShais retired the Portland fourth inning leadoff batter on a grounder to the shortstop. Paige Pung belted a double to right center field. Greyhound Left Fielder Eden Daughenbaugh made a nice running catch to record the second Raider out of the inning. Kayleigh DeShais struck out the next Portland hitter to end the inning.
Jayden Townsend struck out the Eaton Rapids leadoff hitter in the bottom of the fourth inning. Brooke Burns boomed a double to the left field fence. Alexis Biehl came in to pinch run for the Greyhounds. Cadence McQuirt tripled to the right center field fence to drive in Alexis Biehl. Cadence McQuirt scored on an errant pickoff throw.
Zoe Alvarez singled to center field. The next Greyhound batter was out on a fly to right field. Zoe Alvarez moved to second base on an errant throw. Flora Steien grounded a single to centerfield to drive in Zoe Alvarez. Flora Steien advanced to second base when Hailey DePeel was hit by a pitch. Jayden Townsend got the third Greyhound out on a grounder to second base.
Eaton Rapids scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to boost their lead to 6-1.
Kayleigh DeShais struck out the first two Raider hitters in the top of the fifth inning. Gina Sonday singled to left field and stole second base. Gina Sonday moved up to third base on Bailee Fish’s infield single. Jayden Townsend singled to right field to drive in Gina Sonday; Bailee Fish took third base on the play and Jayden Townsend advanced to second base on the throw home.
Autumn Reffitt singled to right field to drive in Bailee Fish and Jayden Townsend. Autumn Reffitt advanced to second base on the throw home. Paige Pung singled to left field to drive in Autumn Reffitt and took second on a throw to home plate. Portland made its third out on a grounder to the shortstop.
Portland scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning to chop the Eaton Rapids lead to 6-5.
Jayden Townsend struck out the Greyhound fifth inning leadoff batter. Eden Daughenbaugh was safe on an error. Jayden Townsend struck out the next Greyhound batter. Eden Daughenbaugh went to second base when Cadence McQuirt was safe on an error. Eaton Rapids made its third out on a line drive to third base.
Kayleigh DeShais struck out the first two Raider batters in the top of the sixth inning. Bella VanAlstine singled to left field. Bella VanAlstine went to second base when Gina Sonday singled to left field. Bailee Fish singled to left field to drive in Bella VanAlstine. Gina Sonday went to third base on the play. Portland made its third out on a fly to centerfield.
Portland scored one run in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game at 6-6.
Brooke DePeel singled to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning for Eaton Rapids. She went to second base when Flora Steien walked. Brooke DePeel was out at third base and Flora Steien safe at second on Hailey DePeel’s fielder’s choice bunt to the pitcher. Ella Patrick singled to right field. Flora Steien scored and Hailey DePeel went to third base on the play. Ella Patrick went to second base on a throw to the plate. Jayden Townsend struck out the next hitter.
Eden Daughenbaugh singled to right field to drive in Hailey DePeel and Ella Patrick. Eden Daughenbaugh went to second base on a wild pitch. Eaton Rapids made its final out of the inning on a ground ball to second base.
Eaton Rapids scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 9-6 lead.
Kayleigh DeShais struck out the Portland leadoff batter in the top of the seventh inning. Paige Pung drew a walk. Kayleigh DeShais struck out the next two hitters to end the game.
