Engadine at St. Ignace – – Boys Basketball – – The Bleacher Denizen – – February 6, 2023 – – by Chuck Krafft
Tonight, your Bleacher Denizen has left his home in Lansing and come up and over the Mackinac Bridge. He plans to blog the “Hooping for a Cure” boy/girl doubleheader in St. Ignace. This is a big fund raiser the St. Ignace community does each year to raise funds to help cancer patients through the “No Cancer Patient Left Behind Program” and the Mackinac Straits Health System Oncology Department.
Well, in this video of “Red River Valley” from my You Tube Channel, I let the viewers know that you never know where the Red River Valley will lead you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w03AhhNk1M8
One place it does not lead is St. Ignace High School, but fortunately, I-75 and US-2 get you pretty close, so I’m here to do the game.
The St. Ignace Saints boys will be hosting the Engadine Eagle boys during tonight’s first game.
Engadine enters this game with a 1-11 record. Eagle Coach Joe Brownson provided me with this information about his background players. Luke Germain is a fine ballhandler who can score from the three point line or slash to the basket. David Parker provides quickness and strong ball handling to the EAgles. Derrick Schroeder is a fine rebounder and scorer in the post. Derrek Clark defends well in the post and also sets excellent screens.
Emmet Dumas and Brendon Wheeler give the Eagles a threat from the three point line. hunter Cameron and Zach Hoadley rebound and defend well in the post. Zach Hoadley is also able to use his quickness to score in the lane.
Mikka Luoto is usually able to help out in the backcourt with the ball handling, defense and scoring, but is injured and unable to play tonight. Skyler Prachar, a solid perimeter defender and Nik Ehn, a good rebounded are sick and unable to play tonight.
The St. Ignace Saints are at 13-2 coming into the game. Coach Ingalls provided me with this information about the Saint players.
Jonny Ingalls has been listed as one of the top 100 basketball players in Michigan by Mick McCabe from the Detroit Free Press. Here are the reasons why! He is an excellent defender, rebounder and leader. He is a great ball handler who can get to the basket against almost anyone and he can shoot mid-range shots and three point shots off the dribble or on the catch and shoot consistently. He is a fine athlete who is very quick and can leap really well.
Kevin Frazier is an experienced senior guard with four years on the Saint varsity. He is a solid ball handler and really good shooter from the three point line. Ethan McLean defends well on the perimeter or in the lane. He is a good scorer near the basket or from the three point line. He hit the winning three point shot from the corner in this game from last year’s Bleacher Denizen annual basketball trip to St. Ignace. https://thebleacherdenizen.com/2022/02/19/rudyard-at-st-ignace-boys-basketball-the-bleacher-denizen-february-18-2022-by-chuck-krafft/
Tyrel Matson is a tough post defender and rebounder. He also scores a lot on putbacks and is a threat from the three point line. Nick Halberg is a tough defender and rebounder in the post. Trevor Visnaw helps at the point; his quickness makes him a fine perimeter defender. Shawn Kingsbury is a tough, active perimeter defender. Kordell Killscrow is a versatile defender who can work on the perimeter or in the post. He also gives the Saints a nice three point shot.
It is now time to review the events of this contest through the hazy eyes of an aging Bleacher Denizen who was never able to escape church league when he attempted to play basketball in what some call “the Stone Age.” While many people criticized his ball handling, I’d like to point out that most guards struggled to dribble and control the rocks we used before inflatable basketballs were invented.
Injured Eagle player Mikka Luoto and Saint Kevin Frazier each hit a layup for their team before the opening tap. The teams agreed to do this to give Mikka Luoto a chance to be part of the game. It is now 2-2 with the opening tap coming up.
