Today, The Bleacher Denizen is at Theunissen Stadium at Central Michigan University. In today’s first game, Portland St. Patrick’s Shamrocks defeated Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart 5-4 in twelve innings to earn its spot in this afternoon’s quarterfinal. Here is the play by play of that game.

The Shamrocks will be playing the Lakers from Maple City Glen Lake in the quarterfinal.

St. Patrick will be at a bit of a pitching disadvantage. They were not able to play their regional semifinal until Thursday this week because of rain. This means that Brady Leonard, who pitched an excellent complete game has not had enough rest to be ready to pitch today. Because the first game lasted twelve innings, Brayden Simon will not be able to pitch in this game and Jerryd Scheurer also used quite a few pitches in the last five innings of the regional final.

St. Patrick won the coin toss and will bat last. Glen Lake will bat first.

It is now time to review the events of this game through the somewhat observant eyes of an aging Bleacher Denizen who never had much of a baseball career. He was showing some promise as a defensive outfielder until the baseball powers that be refused to let him use his bushel basket to catch fly balls. When the fly balls started dropping, so did the Bleacher Denizen’s playing time.

Benji Allen was hit by a pitch to lead off the top of the first inning for Glen Lake. Shamrock Catcher Charlie Thelen fired the ball to second base to catch the runner stealing for the first out. Tristin Boze doubled to right field. Tristan Boze advanced to third base on a groundout to second base by Isaac Hlavka. Sean Fedewa struck out the next Laker batter to end th inning.

Perer Gelsinger retired the St. Patrick leadoff batter in the bottom of the first inning on a grounder to second base. Charlie Thelen walked. Laker Catcher Jacob Peplinski fired the ball to second base to catch the runner stealing. Brady Leonard lined a single up the middle and stole second base. Logan Howe walked. Brady Leonard scored all the way from second base on an errant pickoff throw and Logan Howe went to second base.

Brayden Simon walked. Ball four was a wild pitch and Logan Howe went to third base. Brayden Simon stole second base. Tyler Thelen singled up the middle to drive Logan Howe home as Brayden Simon advanced to third base. Tyler Thelen advanced to second base when Glen Lake threw the ball home to prevent a second run from scoring on the play. Simon White lined out to the third baseman for the third Shamrock out.

St. Patrick scored two runs in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead.

Sean Fedewa retired the three Glen Lake hitters in the top of the second inning on a fly to second base, a grounder to second base and a strikeout.

Peter Gelsinger retired the first two St. Patrick hitters in the top of the second inning on a grounder to shortstop and a grounder to third base. Jerryd Scheurer walked and stole second base. Charlie Thelen walked.

Tristan Boze came in to pitch for Glen Lake. Peter Gelsinger moved to Catcher. Tanner Crick wnet to shortstop. Max Galla took over at third base.

Brady Leonard walked to load the bases as Jerryd Scheurer went to third base and Charlie Thelen to second. Tristan Boze retired the next Shamrock batter on a fielder’s choice grounder to the shortstop to end the inning.

Sean Fedewa retired the three Laker hitters in the top of the third inning on a strikeout, a foul fly to first base where Tyler Thelen made a nice running catch and a fly to right field.

Brayden Simon was awarded first base on catcher interference to lead off the bottom of the third inning for St. Patrick. He went to second base when Tyler Thelen walked. Brayden Simon went to third base and Tyler Thelen to second when T.J> Chamberlain was hit on the helmet by a pitch. Tristin Boze retired the next two batters on a soft liner to first base and a strikeout to end the inning.

With three full innings in the books, St. Patrick had a 2-0 lead.

Tristin Boze singled to left field to lead off the top of the fourth inning for Glen Lake. The next hitter hit a sharp grounder to Shamrock Second Baseman Nathan Fears, who flipped the ball to Shortstop Jerryd Scheurer, who fired to first baseman Tyler Thelen to complete the Shamrock double play. Peter Gelsinger singled to center field. Sully Atkins entered the game as a courtesy runner for Peter Gelsinger. Tanner Crick singled to left field. Shamrock Left Fielder Simon White fired the ball to third baseman Logan Howe, who applied a tag to the runner trying to advance to end the inning.

Charlie Thelen and then Brady Leonard walked to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning for St. Patrick.

Tanner Croclc came in to pitch for Glen Lake. Tristin Boze went back to shortstop. and Max Galla went to third base.

Charlie Thelen advanced to third base and Logan Howe to second base on a wild pitch TAnner Crick struck out the next Shamrock batter. Charlie Thelen scored and Brady Leonard went to third base on an RBI bounceout to the pitcher by Brayden Simon. Tyler Thelen was hit by a pitch and stole second base. Simon White singled to left field to drive Brady Leonard and Simon White home.

Hudson King came in to pinch run for Simon White. Hudson King stole second base. Tanner Crick struck out the next Shamrock hitter to end the inning.

St. Patrick scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to boost its lead to 5-0.

Colton Newman walked to lead off the top of the fifth inning for Glen Lake. Sean Fedewa struck out the next three Laker hitters to end the inning.

Nathan Fears singled to left field to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning for St. Patrick. Nathan Fears advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt to third base by Jerryd Scheurer. Charlie Thelen hit a bloop single to second base; Nathan Fears had to hold at second base. Brady Leonard singled up the middle to drive Nathan Fears home. Charlie Thelen advanced to second base. Charlie Thelen advanced to third base and Brady Leonard to second base on a wild pitch.

Everyone was safe on Logan Howe’s fielders choice grounder to third base when the ball was thrown home to late to get the runner. Charlie Thelen scored, Brady Leonard went to third abse and Logan Howe was safe at first base. Brady Leonard scored on a wild pitch. When the runner on first tried to go to third, he was thrown out. Brayden Simon singled to left field and took second base on a passed ball. Tanner Crick got the next Shamrock hitter out on a grounder to first base to end the inning.

St. Patrick scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to extend its lead to 8-0.

Sean Fedewa retired the first two Laker batters in the top of the sixth inning on a foul popup to first base and a fly to center field. Isaac Hlavka walked. T.J. Chamberlain made a great running catch of a drive by Peter Gelsinger to deep right field to end the inning.

Ben Allen came in to pitch for Glen Lake. Isaac Hlavka moved to first base and Peter Kuncaitis went out to right field.

Ben Allen retired the first two Shamrock batters in the bottom of the sixth inning on a popup to first base and a bouncer to the mound. Nathan Fears walked and advanced to second base and then to third base on two wild pitches. Jerryd Scheurer walked. Ball four was a wild pitch and Nathan Fears scored from third base. Jerryd Scheurer stole second base. Ben Allen retired the next Shamrock batter on a foul fly to third base to end the inning.

St. Patrick scored one run in the bottom of the sixth inning to push its lead to 9-0.

Sean Fedewa retired the first Laker hitter in the top of the seventh inning on a grounder to third base. Colton Newman walked. Sean Fedewa struck out the next hitter. Fletcher MIddleton lined a single to left field and Colton Newman advanced to second base. Sean Fedewa retired the next hitter on a fly to left field to end the game.

St. Patrick won the State Quarterfinal by a 9-0 score and will play in next weekend’s semifinal game!!

Tristin Boze had a double and a single for Glen Lake. Peter Gelsinger, Tanner Crick and Fletcher Middleton each had one single.

Peter Gelsinger pitched one and two thirds innings for Glen Lake. Tristin Boze pitched one and one third innings. He struck out two Shamrock hitters. Tanner Crick pitched two innings and struck out two batters. Ben Allen pitched one inning.

Brady Leonard had two singles and one RBI for St. Patrick. Simon White had a single and two RBI. Brayden Simon and Tyler Thelen each had one single and one RBI. Charlie Thelen and Nathan Fears each had one single. Logan Howe had one RBI.

Sean Fedewa pitched a complete game shutout for St. Patrick in the quarterfinal game. He gave up five hits and struck out seven Laker hitters.
