Coleman at Portland St. Patrick – – Eight Man Football – – The Bleacher Denizen – – September 27, 2025 – – by Chuck Krafft

Today, your Bleacher Denizen is headed to Portland, where the Shamrocks from St. Patricks will host the Comets from Coleman. St. Patrick enters this game with a perfect 4-0 record while Coleman is at 2-2.

Tonight is Homecoming at St. Patrick and your Bleacher Denizen is excited to see the halftime events. I was behind the Homecoming Parade, but I managed to get to Portland High (where St. Patrick plays its football games) early enough to copy down the rosters so I could take my notes. (For some reason, rosters were not available.) It was great to see Ken Cook, the announcer, and some of the other St. Patrick football volunteers I have gotten to know over the years.

I learned the St. Patrick’s cross-country teams did really well in a meet today, especially T.J. Chamberlain! For a small school, St. Patrick has a lot of quality athletes this year. (None of the people who excelled at cross country today are on the football team.)

Shelby Miller, a 2015 graduate of St. Patrick, did a nice job singing the National Anthem and it was time for the game to start.

Let us now look at the results of this game through the somewhat clear (occasionally) lenses of an Aging Bleacher Denizen who was never able to make much of a mark in football. I believe your Bleacher Denizen did set a practice record for “most pancake blocks suffered by a defensive lineman” back in the day, so at least I’m not totally forgotten!!

T.J. Chamberlain, who was the star of the day’s cross country meet came into the press box to emcee the halftime show. Mr. Chamberlain was also a starting outfielder on St. Patrick’s State Baseball Champions last spring. I was tempted to drop a piece of paper to see if he would make a diving catch. (T.J. had a great running, diving catch in right field in the top of the fifth inning of the State Championship game.) I decided that trying to drop the paper might distract him while he read his script, so I backed off.

For his part, T.J. Chamberlain did a fine job emceeing the halftime ceremonies. Charlie Thelen was named Homecoming King and Mattie Honsowitz was named Homecoming Queen.
