Portland St. Patrick at Dansville – – First Game of Baseball Doubleheader – – The Bleacher Denizen – – May 16, 2024 – – by Chuck Krafft

Today, it’s a great day for baseball and the Bleacher Denizen is in Dansville’s press box waiting for the game to begin!! The Dansville Aggies are hosting the Shamrocks from Portland St. Patrick in a baseball doubleheader.

It is always nice to come to Dansville. Their fields have been recently renovated and are in great shape. The press box is also really nice.

Here are the starting lineups. St. Patrick is the visiting team and will bat first.

Let’s take a look at the events of this game through the somewhat open eyes of an Aging Bleacher Denizen whose baseball career never really took off. It took the Bleacher Denizen too long to learn that while “close” counts in horseshoes, umpires give you little if any credit for almost hitting a pitched baseball.

Dansville Pitcher Wyatt Mosley retired the first two Shamrock hitters in the top of the first inning on a strikeout and a foul popup to third base. Brady Leonard singled up the middle. Wyatt Mosely picked him off first base to end the inning.

Brady Leonard retired the three Aggie first inning hitters on two flies to right field and a fly to center field.

Wyatt Mosley retired the three Shamrock second inning hitters on a fly to right field and two strikeouts.

Brady Leonard retired the three Aggie second inning hitters on two strikeouts and a bouncer to the pitcher.

Wyatt Mosley struck out the Shamrock leadoff batter in the top of the third inning. Devin Cook was safe at first base on an error. Devin Cook advanced to third base on a passed ball and scored on another passed ball. Wyatt Mosley struck out the next two St. Patrick hitters to end the inning.

St. Patrick scored one run in the top of the third inning to take a 1-0 lesf.

Brady Leonard got the Aggie leadoff batter in the bottom of the third inning on a line drive to left field. He struck out the next two batters to end the inning.

Dansville left fielder Mayson Burgett showed great concentration as he caught a fly to left field by the Shamrock fourth inning leadoff batter after he slipped. Brady Leonard singled up the middle and took second base on a passed ball. Charlie Thelen walked. Brayden Simon beat out a bunt single as Brady Leonard went to third base and Charlie Thelen to second base. Brady Leonard scored as Charlie Thelen moved up to third and Brayden Simon to second on an RBI sacrifice bunt by Simon White. Wyatt Mosley struck out the next batter to end the inning.

St. Patrick scored one run in the top of the fourth inning to push its lead to 2-0.

Brady Leonard retired the three Aggie batters in the bottom of the fourth inning on two strikeouts and a groundout to the shortstop.

Wyatt Mosley got all three Shamrock hitters in the top of the fifth inning out on a bunt to first base where Aggie Second Baseman Joey McMillan alertly covered first base and two strikeouts.

Brady Leonard retired the Aggie leadoff hitter in the bottom of the fifth inning when Lucas Simon made a nice running catch on a fly to center field by Cam Graf. Mayson Burgett singled up the middle. This was Dansville’s first base runner of the game as Brady Leonard had a perfect game through four and one third innings.

Brady Leonard retired the next Aggie hitter on a fly to center. Mason Ruttan lined a single to left field to send Mayson Burgett to second base. Quinnton Burgett entered the game as a courtesy runner for Mason Ruttan. Brady Leonard picked the runner off first base to end the inning.

With fischeurerve innings in the books, St. Patrick had a 2-0 lead.

Jerryd Scheurer beat out an infield single to lead off the top of the sixth inning for St. Patrick. Brady Leonard walked and Jerryd Scheurer advanced to second base. Jerryd Scheurer went to third base and Brady Leonard to second base on a passed ball.

Wyatt Mosley struck out the next three Shamrock hitters to strand runners at second and third base. This was a truly impressive piece of pitching!!

Jerryd Scheurer came in to pitch for St. Patrick. Brady Leonard moved to third base and Brayden Simon took over at shortstop.

Joey McMillan lined a single to center field to lead off the sixth inning for Dansville. Everett Dysinger entered the game as a pinch runner. Shamrock Catcher Charlie Thelen fired the ball to second base to catch the runner stealing. Jerryd Scheurer struck out the next batter and got the third Aggie out on a popup to second base.

With six innings in the books, St. Patrick continued to hold a 2-0 lead.

Wyatt Mosley struck out all three St. Patrick batters in the top of the seventh inning.

Shamrock Pitcher Jerryd Scheurer retired the Aggie leadoff batter in the bottom of the seventh inning on a popup to third base. Shamrock Second Baseman made a fine running catch to turn a bit for a single by Wyatt Mosley into an out. Cam Graf drew a walk. Jerryd Scheurer struck out the next Dansville batter to end the game.

St. Patrick won the first game of this doubleheader by a 2-0 score.

Mayson Burgett, Mason Ruttan and JOey McMillan each had a single for Dansville.

Wyatt Mosley pitched the complete game for Dansville. He gave two runs (only one was an earned run) and four hits while he struck out an impressive fifteen batters.

Brady Leonard had two singles for St. Patrick. Jerryd Scheurer and Brayden Simon each had one single. Simon White had one RBI.

Brady Leonard pitched five innings for St. Patrick. He gave up zero runs and two hits while striking out six batter. Jerryd Scheurer pitched the final two innings for the Shamrocks. He gave up zero runs and one hit while striking out two batters.

I would like to congratulate both teams as this is the best-played baseball game I have seen this season. Both teams were great on defense and the pitching was superb for both teams.
