Tonight, the District Tournament at Vestaburg is moving to the semifinal round. In tonight’s second game, the Pirates from Fulton will face the Shamrocks from Portland St. Patrick. Fulton enters this game with a 17-5 record; they were second place in the MSAC. St. Patrick has a 12-6 record and finished in third place in the CMAC.

Here are some of the guys who will be playing for Fulton.

Ian Lamkin is an excellent three point shooter who can get really hot. Parker Billings is a big post player who is an excellent all-around athlete. He is tall, strong and fast. He’s a willing defender and rebounder who has a number of effective post moves for scoring as well. Bryson Sattler and Parker Duflo are both fine ball handlers and determined, gritty defenders. Both of them can attack the basket well.

Peyton Reynolds is a glue guy who defends the perimeter or the post well. He is a tough screener and very willing to take charging fouls from the opposition. Parker Hungerford is a solid perimeter defender and passer. Tanner Villalobos is a gritty defender who can hit the three point shot.

St. Patrick also has some fine players.

Brayden Simon is a tough, athletic senior leader for the Shamrocks. He is big and tough enough to defend in the post and quick enough to cover the perimeter. He is a fine scorer either in the post or from the three point line. Jerryd Scheurer is a sophomore point guard who is in his third year on the varsity. He is really quick and defends the perimeter well. On offense, he has a lot of responsibilities handling the ball and setting up plays. He has a fine three point shot which he can shoot off the dribble if necessary and can also attack the basket to score.

Charlie Thelen is a big guy who rebounds well in the post. He is a great scorer who can score inside and is also capable of getting hot from the three point line. Landon Simpson is an excellent perimeter defender, passer and ball handler who can hit the three point shot. Brady Leonard is an excellent athlete who can defend the post or the perimeter. He also has a good three point shot.

Charlie Thelen rebounds and defends well in the post. He rebounds well and gets a lot of points off putbacks. Nathan Fears is an extremely aggressive perimeter defender who disrupts opposing ball handlers. Gabe Wernet is a good perimeter defender. Aiden Mosser defends well on the perimeter or in the post.

St. Patrick wins the opening tap. The Shamrocks commit an offensive foul. Fulton misses a layup. Brayden Simon passes to Charlie Thelen, who hits a three point shot from the wing to give the Shamrocks the first three points of the game. Brady Leonard gets his hand on the ball and a Fulton dribbler loses the ball out of bounds. St. Patrick (okay, it was really a Shamrock player and not the saint, himself) misses a three pointer from the wing. Bryson Sattler drives and hits a layup to trim the Shamrock lead to 3-2.

St. Patrick misses a threeball from the wing. Charlie Thelen pulls down the offensive rebound for the Shamrocks. St. Patrick misses a layup. Jerryd Scheurer steals the ball for the Shamrocks. St. Patrick misses a layup. Fulton misses a threeball from the wing. St. Patrick misses a threeball from the corner.

Landon Simpson causes a tieup. The Possession Arrow is practicing its moves for a dance contest and misses the play; the ball is awarded to Fulton. Brady Leonard knocks a Pirate pass out of bounds; Fulton retains possession. Peyton Reynolds passes to Parker Billings, who is fouled on a layup. Parker Billings hits one of his two free throws to tie the game at 3-3 with 4:42 left in the opening quarter.

Brady Leonard passes to Jerryd Scheurer, who hits a layup for the Shamrocks to retake the lead. Brayden Simon steals the ball for the Shamrocks. St. Patrick misses a three pointer from the wing. Tyler Thelen hits a putback for St. Patrick. Landon Simpson knocks the ball out of bounds. Fulton retains possession. Nathan Fears nearly steals the ball for the Shamrocks, but Fulton recovers. Bryson Sattler steals the ball for the Fulton and is fouled. He hits two free throws to shave the St. Patrick lead to 7-5 with 3:46 remaining in the first quarter.

Tyler Thelen bounces the ball to Brady Leonard, who hits a layup for St. Patrick. He is fouled on the play, but misses his free throw. A Fulton dribbler loses the ball out of bounds. St. Patrick commits an offensive foul. Fulton misses a reverse layup. Parker Billings pulls down the offensive rebound for the Pirates. Fulton misses a layup. St. Patrick misfires on a triple try from the wing. Parker Billings passes to Bryson Sattler, who is cutting to the basket. Bryson Sattler hits a layup to cut the Shamrock lead to 9-7.

Ian Lamkin knocks the ball away from St. Patrick; Jerryd Scheurer recovers the ball for the Shamrocks and hits a layup. Nathan Fears steals the ball for the Shamrocks and Brayden Simon hits a fast break layup. Fulton misses a six foot hook shot. Brady Leonard hits a fast break layup for St. Patrick; he is fouled on the play, but misses his free throw. Nathan Fears steals the ball for St. Patrick. St. Patrick misses a ten foot shot from the side of the lane. Fulton rebounds the ball and the first quarter buzzer lets us all know that it is the end of the opening quarter.

After one quarter, St. Patrick holds a 15-7 lead.

St. Patrick has the ball to begin the second quarter. The Shamrocks miss a three point shot from the side. Peyton Reynolds passes to parker Duflo, who makes a short drive and hits a layup for Fulton. St. Patrick misses a driving layup. Jerryd Scheurer taps the offensive rebound to Landon Simpson and the Shamrocks have another opportunity. The Shamrocks miss a threeball from the corner. Aiden Mosser gets the offensive rebound for St. Patrick. Jerryd Scheurer passes to Brayden Simon, who hits a three point shot from the wing to give St. Patrick an 18-9 lead.

Fulton is fouled on a driving hook shot, but misses two free throws. Peyton Reynolds fights for the offensive rebound and St. Patrick loses the ball out of bounds. Bryson Sattler passes to Ian Lamkin, who hits a three point shot from the corner to cut the St. Patrick lead to 18-12.

Charlie Thelen bursts into the lane and hits a twelve foot shot for St. Patrick. Fulton travels with the ball. (Basketball cliches can be interesting. There is a probability that traveling without the ball would not be newsworthy.) Jerryd Scheurer passes to a Shamrock teammate who is fouled on a layup, but misses both his free throws. With 5:09 remaining in the first half, St. Patrick has a 20-12 lead.

Brady Leonard pulls down the offensive rebound for the Shamrocks. Ian Lamkin knocks the ball away from St. Patrick, but the Shamrocks recover and call timeout to avoid turning the ball over. St. Patrick misses a three point shot from the side. Landon Simpson’s defense forces Fulton into a traveling violation that negates a layup. Brayden Simon drives and hits a ten foot shot in the lane to give St. Patrick a 22-12 lead.

Fulton travels on a post move. Jerryd Scheurer passes to Brayden Simon, who hits a three point shot from the top of the key for the Shamrocks. Bryson Sattler drives and hits a layup for the Pirates. St. Patrick is whistled for traveling. Bryson Sattler drives and hits a layup for Fulton to trim the St. Patrick lead to 25-16.

Jerryd Scheurer passes to Brayden Simon, who hits a layup for St. Patrick. St. Patrick is given a technical foul. Bryson Sattler makes one of the two technical free throws for Fulton. Fulton inbounds the ball after the free throws (because of the technical foul). The Pirates miss a ten foot shot off the dribble from the baseline. St. Patrick misses a three pointer from the side. Bryson Sattler passes to Parker Billings, who hits a layup to trim the Shamrock lead to 27-19.

Charlie Thelen passes to Jerryd Scheurer, who quickly relays the ball to Brady Leonard, who hits a three point shot from the wing for St. Patrick. Fulton turns the ball over. Parker Billings steals the ball and hits a fast break layup for the Pirates just as the halftime buzzer sounds.

St. Patrick has a 30-21 halftime lead.

Parker Billings hits a fast break layup to shave the Shamrock lead to 32-23.

Parker Billings passes to Ian Lamkin, who hits a long, long, long three point shot past the top of the key for Fulton. St. Patrick turns the ball over. Ian Lamkin passes to Peyton Reynolds, who is fouled on an eight foot shot from the side of the lane. Peyton Reynolds hits two free throws to trim the Shamrock lead to 46-30 with 44.5 seconds before the end of quarter number three.

St. Patrick travels. Bryson Sattler drives and hits a layup for Fulton. He is fouled and hits his free throw for Fulton with just 3.7 seconds before the quarter ends. St. Patrick’s inbound pass hits the ceiling. Landon Simpson steals the ball for the Shamrocks, but there is no time to make any play.

With three quarters in the books, St. Patrick has a 46-33 lead. (Fulton scored the last eight points of the third quarter.)

St. Patrick drives from the side and misses a ten foot shot from the baseline. The rebound goes out of bounds and St. Patrick gets the ball back. St. Patrick misses a driving layup. Fulton commits a traveling violation. Parker Billings nearly steals the ball for the Pirates, but the Shamrocks recover. Brayden Simon is fouled on a driving layup and hits one of his two free throws to give the Shamrocks a 47-33 lead with 6:34 left in the contest.

Ian Lamkin banks in a threeball from the wing for Fulton. (I’m sure I heard him yell “BANK” when he released the ball. Well – – maybe.) Ian Lamkin goes to the other end and plays tough defense to force a Shamrock timeout. Bryson Sattler steals the ball and hits a fast break layup for Fulton. Brayden Simon drives and hits a reverse layup for St. Patrick and the Shamrocks lead 49-38.

Fulton misses a layup. St. Patrick throws a pass out of bounds. Landon Simpson knocks a Pirate pass out of bounds; Fulton retains possession. Parker Duflo passes to Parker Billings for a Pirate layup. to cut the Shamrock lead to 49-40.

St. Patrick travels on a drive to the basket. Fulton misses a three point shot from the wing. Peyton Reynolds’ tough defense forces St. Patrick to miss a layup. Brayden Simon steals the ball for the Shamrocks and hits a fast break layup. Fulton loses the ball out of bounds. Parker Duflo knocks the ball away from St. Patrick, but the Shamrocks recover. Jerryd Scheurer is fouled and sinks two free throws to give St. Patrick a 53-40 lead with 2:26 left on the clock.

Fulton misses a threeball from the side. Brady Leonard is fouled and hits two free throws for St. Patrick. Bryson Sattler is fouled on a driving layup and hits two free throws for Fulton. A double technical foul is called. St. Patrick is given possession; because of the double technical, no one shoots free throws. Brady Leonard is fouled and hits two free throws to give the Shamrocks a 57-42 lead with 1:25 remaining.

St. Patrick wins the game by the score of 59-47 and will play Fowler in Friday night’s District Final.

Bryson Sattler led the Fulton scoring with 19 points. Ian Lamkin tossed in 9 points and Parker Billings contributed 8 points. Parker Duflo and Peyton Reynolds each added 4 points. Connor Cunningham had 3 points.

Brayden Simon led the St. Patrick scoring with 19 points as the Shamrocks placed four players in double figures. Brady Leonard scored 14 points, Jerryd Scheurer had 13 points and Charlie Thelen totaled 11 points. Tyler Thelen added 2 points.
