Today, the Bleacher Denizen is at Perry, where the Ramblers will host the Shamrocks from Portland St. Patrick. This is the second game of their baseball doubleheader. I just learned that St. Patrick is ranked Number 1 in Division 4 baseball. Kudos to the Shamrocks! (I saw a link to the M-Live article on a St. Patrick parent’s page!

It is still really cold, but your Bleacher Denizen fought it off and got the starting lineups for both teams. Your Bleacher Denizen dealt with an interesting circumstance when he learned that even though we are in Perry, for the second game, Perry will bat first and St. Patrick will be the home team. The mind boggles! (Actually, this just makes things a bit fairer for conference games. The season is too short for the teams to be able to play a home/away combination.)

It is now time to review the events of this game through the somewhat alert eyes of an Aging Bleacher Denizen who never escaped church league when he attempted to play basketball. For those of you who wonder why your Bleacher Denizen is bringing up his basketball career in a baseball article, I guess there really isn’t a good answer. Let’s take a look at what happened in the game!

Jerryd Scheurer struck out all three Rambler batters in the top of the first inning.

Jerryd Scheurer singled up the middle to lead off the bottom of the first inning for St. Patrick. He stole second base and then stole third base. Charlie Thelen rifled a single to right field to drive Jerryd Scheurer home. Charlie Thelen went to second base on an errant pickoff throw and stole third base. Brady Leonard walked and stole second base.

Rambler Catcher Johnny McConnell made a great diving effort and almost caught the ball, but it fell just short of his glove. Brayden Simon took advantage of his extra chance and singled to left center field to drive in Charlie Thelen. Brady Leonard went to third base. Brady Leonard scored and Brayden Simon went to third base on a bad pickoff throw. Brayden Simon stole third base.

Brady Doerner struck out the next Shamrock hitter. Isaiah Rockey pounded a double to deep center field to drive Brayden Simon in. Brady Doerner alertly picked the runner off second base. Ben White drew a walk and stole second base; he went to third on an overthrow. T.J. Chamberlain singled to left field to drive Ben White home. Nathan Fears was hit by a pitch and T.J. Chamberlain took second base. Brady Doerner got the third Shamrock out of an inning on a line drive to the shortstop.

St. Patrick scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 5-0 lead.

Nolan Krupp was safe at first base on an error to lead off the top of the second inning for Perry; he went to second base when Wyatt Patrick was safe on a squibbed single. Shamrock Catcher Charlie Thelen made a fine throw to second base and picked the runner off. Jerryd Scheurer struck out the next Rambler batter and got the third out when First Baseman Tyler Thelen made a leaping grab of a fly ball.

Charlie Thelen walked to lead off the top of the second inning for the Shamrocks.

Nolan Krupp came in to pitch for Perry. Brady Doerner went to center field and Wyatt Patrick moved to second base.

Nolan Krupp retired the next Shamrock hitter on a popup to the mound. Charlie Thelen stole second base and scored on a double down the left field line by Brayden Simon. Brayden Simon stole third base and scored on an error. Nolan Krupp retired the next two Shamrock hitters on a grounder to the shortstop and a fly to center field.

St. Patrick scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning to boost its lead to 7-0.

Jerryd Scheurer struck out Perry’s leadoff batter in the top of the third inning. Tyler Thelen made a great running catch of a foul fly at first base to record the next out. Shamrock Second Baseman Brayden Simon made a great running catch of a fly ball to end the Rambler inning.

T.J. Chamberlain led off the bottom of the third inning for St. Patrick with a single. He took second base on a productive groundout to third base by Nathan Fears. T.J. Chamberlain stole third base. Jerryd Scheurer made a bid for a single, but Brady Doerner made a great running catch with the ball barely a foot off the ground to turn the play into a sacrifice fly that drove T.J. Chamberlain home.

Charlie Thelen doubled to left field. Charlie Thelen stole third base and tried to score on an overthrow. Perry Left Fielder J.T. Lynch made a fine throw to home plate where Catcher Johnny McConnell made the tag to record the third Shamrock out of the inning.

St. Patrick scored one run in the bottom of the third inning to take an 8-0 lead.

Shamrock Shortstop Nathan Fears made a nice running catch of a short fly ball to record Perry’s first out in the top of the fourth inning. Tyger Whitbeck grounded the ball past Nathan Fears, who made a valiant dive to try to stop the ball, for a single. Tyger Whitbeck stole second base. Nolan Krupp singled to left field to drive Tyger Whitbeck home with Perry’s first run and went to second base on the throw home. Jerryd Scheurer picked the runner off second base. Jerryd Scheurer got Perry’s third out on a grounder to the shortstop.

Perry scored one run in the top of the fourth inning to shave the Shamrock lead to 8-1.

Brady Leonard singled to left field to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning for St. Patrick. He stole second base and scored when Brayden Simon was safe at second base on an error. Brayden Simon stole third base. Tyler Thelen walked and stole second base. Isaiah Rockey hit a sacrifice fly to center field to drive Brayden Simon home.

Perry Catcher Johnny McConnell fired the ball to second base to catch the runner trying to steal. Ben White walked and went to second base when T.J. Chamberlain was safe at first base on an error. Nathan Fears beat out a bunt single to load the bases. Nolan Krupp got the third Shamrock out on a bouncer to second base.

St. Patrick scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to boost its lead to 10-1.

T.J. Chamberlain came in to pitch for St. Patrick. Jerryd Scheurer moved to shortstop, Nathan Fears moved to second base and Brayden Simon went out to right field.

T.J. Chamberlain struck out Perry’s leadoff batter in the top of the fifth inning. He retired the next two batters on a bouncer to the mound and a liner to second base.

Max Grennell came in to pitch for Perry. Nolan Krupp went to second base and Wyatt Patrick moved to right field.

Charlie Thelen was safe on an error to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning for St. Patrick and took second base on a wild pitch. Max Grennell struck out the next Shamrock hitter. Pinch Hitter Grant Pline drew a walk. Pinch Hitter Hudson King hit an RBI groundout to first base to drive Charlie Thelen in with the winning run.

Charlie Thelen’s run gave St. Patrick an 11-1 lead; the game was stopped by the mercy rule.

Nolan Krupp had a single and one RBI for Perry. Tyger Whitbeck and Wyatt Patrick each contributed a single.

Nolan Krupp pitched three innings against the tough St. Patrick lineup.

Brayden Simon had a double, a single and two RBI for St. Patrick. Charlie Thelen had a double, a single and one RBI. T.J. Chamberlain had two singles and one RBI. Isaiah Rockey had a double and two RBI. Jerryd Scheurer had a single and one RBI. Brady Leonard and Nathan Fears each had one single. Hudson King had one RBI.
