Mason at DeWitt – – Baseball – – Second Game of Doubleheader – – The Bleacher Denizen – – April 25, 2025 – – by Chuck Krafft

Today, your Belacher Denizen is at DeWitt to take notes at a baseball doubleheader between the Hometown Panthers and the Mason Bulldogs. This will be a play by play of the second game. It a bit of a twist, DeWitt will actually be the home team for both games of this doubleheader. (In most league games, the visiting team becomes the “home team” and bats last in the second game of doubleheaders.) Your Bleacher Denizen was just learning the “visiting team batting last” concept and now has to reverse his thinking. The mind boggles!!!

Here are the starting lineups. Mason is the visiting team and will bat first.

Greg Seybert will pitch, but will not bat.

Greg Seybert retired the Mason leadoff batter in the top of the first inning on a grounder to the shortstop. Wyatt Ball was hit by a pitch. Wyatt Ball took second base when Colton McCaleb’s line drive was knocked down by Panther First Baseman Jake Schorfhaar, who ran to first base to record the out. Joey Schild drew a walk. Greg Seybert got the third Bulldog out on a fly to center field.

Sam Leonard was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the first inning for DeWitt. Mason Catcher Andrew Stahle fired the ball to second base to catch the runner stealing. Mason Pitcher Maddox Armour retired the next two Panther hitters on a fly to left field and a strikeout to end the inning.

Ryan Myers led off the top of the second inning for Mason with a single. He stole second base and advanced to third base on a fly out to right field by Johnny Bolton. Kohlton Tyrrell singled to center field to drive Ryan Myers home. Logan Davis singled to right field and Kohlton Tyrrell went to second base.

DeWitt second baseman Trav Moore went back into short right field and caught a fly for the second Bulldog out of the inning. Wyatt Bell walked to load the bases. Greg Seybert retired the next hitter on a grounder to third base to end the inning.

Mason scored one run in the top of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead.

Joseph Bobeda hit what looked like a bouncing single to left field when the ball took a bad hop and leaped over the left fielder’s head, so Joseph Bobeda ended up with a triple. (The Mason left fielder had no chance to stop that ball that suddenly hopped over his head.) Joe Zubal hit a sacrifice fly to deep center field to drive Joseph Bobeda home with DeWitt’s tying run.

Trav Moore singled to center field. Lucas Brandell doubled to the center field fence and Trav Moore advanced to third base. Trav Moore scored and Lucas Brandell moved to third base on an RBI groundout to second base by Jake Schorthaar. DeWitt made its third out on a grounder to second base.

DeWitt scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 2-1 lead.

Joey Schild led off the top of the third inning for Mason with a single to left field. DeWitt Catcher Cole Hagle fired the ball to second base to catch the runner stealing. DeWitt Pitcher Greg Seybert struck out the next Bulldog hitter. Ryan Myers doubled to deep left field. Mason made its third out on a fly to second base.

Sam Leonard led off the bottom of the third inning for DeWitt by smashing a home run to left field. Maddox Armour struck out the next Panther batter. Elliott Larner doubled to left field. Maddox Armour struck out the next batter. Elliott Larner stole third base. Joe Zubal walked. DeWitt made its third out of the inning on a fielder’s choice grounder to second base.

Dewitt added one in the bottom of the third inning to boost its lead to 3-1.

In the top of the fourth inning, leadoff batter Kohlton Tyrrell’s grounder took a bad hop completely over the shortstop’s head and he got a single. Logan Davis belted a viscious liner that was caught by Jake Smith at shortstop; he alertly threw to first base to double off the runner. Mason made its third out on a grounder to the shortstop.

Maddox Armour retired the three DeWitt hitters in the bottom of the fourth inning on a fly to right field, a grounder to shortstop and a bouncer to the pitcher.

Wyatt Ball led off the top of the fifth inning for Mason with a single up the middle. Wyatt Ball stole second base. Colton McCaleb drew a walk. Wyatt Ball advanced to third base and Colton McCaleb to second base on a wild pitch. Joey Schild was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Wyatt Ball scored, Colton McCaleb advanced to third base and Joey Schild to second base on a balk. Carson Chapin hit a sacrifice fly to center field to drive Colton McCaleb in with the tying run. Joey Schild advanced to third base. Greg Seybert retired the next two batters on a fly to right field and a fly to center field to end the inning.

Mason scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game at 3-3.

Sam Leonard beat out an infield single to open the bottom of the fifth inning for DeWitt. Maddox Armour struck out the next two Panther hitters; Sam Leonard stole second base. Joseph Bobeda singled to center field to drive Sam Leonard home with the go-ahead run. After a couple overthrows, Joseph Bobeda ended up on third base. Joe Zubal clouted a home run; Joseph Bobeda also scored. Maddox Armour struck out the next batter to end the inning.

DeWitt scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 6-3 lead.

Greg Seybert retired the three Mason batters in the top of the sixth inning on a fly to center field where Joseph Bobeda made a fantastic diving catch, a fly to first base and a fly to left field where Lucas Brandell made a running catch.

Wyatt Ball came in to pitch for Mason and Maddox Armour went out to play center field.

Lucas Brandell singled to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning for DeWitt. Jake Schorfhaar was safe at first and Lucas Brandell out at second on a fielder’s choice grounder to the shortstop. Wyatt Ball struck out the next batter on got DeWitt’s third out on a fielder’s choice grounder to the shortstop.

Wyatt Ball singled to lead off the top of the seventh inning for Mason. Colton McCaleb was safe at first base and Wyatt Ball out at second base on a fielder’s choice grounder to first base. Greg Seybert retired the next Mason batter on a fly to right field. The next Bulldog hitter grounded into a fielder’s choice grounder to the shortstop to end the game.

DeWitt won the second game of the doubleheader 6-3 to earn a split for the day.

Ryan Myers had a double and a single for Mason. Kohlton Tyrrell had two singles and one RBI. Wyatt Ball had two singles. Joey Schild and Logan Davis each had one single. Carson Chapin had one RBI.

Maddox Armour pitched five innings for the Bulldogs. He allowed six runs and eight hits while striking out four DeWitt batters. Wyatt Ball pitched one inning. He gave up zero runs and one hit while striking out one batter.

Sam Leonard had a home run, a single and one RBI for DeWitt. Joe Zubal had a home run and three RBI. Joseph Bobeda had a triple, a single and one RBI. Lucas Brandell had a double and a single. Elliott Larner had a double. Trav Moore had a single. Jake Schorfhaar had one RBI.

Greg Seybert pitched the complete seven-inning game for DeWitt. He gave up three runs and eight hits while striking out one batter.
