Montabella at Portland St. Patrick – – Eight Man Football – – The Bleacher Denizen – – October 24, 2025 – – By Chuck Krafft
Today, is the final day of the football regular season. The Mustangs from Montabella are visiting the Shamrocks of Portland St. Patrick in a collision of two undefeated eight man football titans!! This will be a confrontation between the winners of the Mid-State Activities Conference Red and Blue Divisions.
It was fun to see the announcer, Ken Cook and all the other people from St. Patrick in the booth. I frequently cover St. Patrick games and the Shamrock fans are always really supportive!!
Let us now look at the events of this major game through the occasionally open eyes of an Aging Bleacher Denizen whose football career never really got going. When the powers that be refused to allow him to wear his medieval suit of armor on the offensive line, his ability to stand up to defensive lineman was severely decreased.
Montabella’s Cody Omo booted the opening kickoff to the St. Patrick 21 yard line. Aiden Fandel caught the kickoff and returned it twenty-three yards before Cody Omo stopped him. St. Patrick started its opening possession on its own 44 yard line.
Brady Leonard’s first down run up the left tackle gained five yards before he ran into Cody Omo. Bryton Strohl and Cody Omo teamed up to stop the Shamrock second down run for a one yard loss. Jerryd Scheuerer tossed a third down pass to Charlie Thelen for an eleven yard gain. T.J. Rood pushed him out of bounds, but St. Patrick had a first down.
Hudson King went to the right for a twenty yard gain and another first down. Austin Jensen made the tackle for the Mustangs.
Caleb Pline went around the left end and gained fifteen yards before Gavin Simmons pulled him down. St. Patrick had a first down on the Montabella 6 yard line.
Jerryd Scheurer went around the left end on first down and gained five yards before Ethan Greene took him down. Gavin Simmons stopped the Shamrock second down run into the middle for no gain. On third down, Caleb Pline followed a great block by Logan Krieger into the end zone for a one yard touchdown.
Charlie Thelen snapped the ball, Brady Leonard held the ball and Brody Beckhold kicked the successful extra point to give St. Patrick a 7-0 lead with 7:52 remaining in the opening quarter.
Ben White kicked the ball off into the end zone for the Shamrocks. The Mustangs started their next possession on their own 20 yard line.
Ben White stopped the Mustang first down run to the right for no gain. The Mustangs’ second down screen pass fell incomplete. Jerryd Scheurer leaped to intercept the Mustang third down pass on the Montabella 38 yard line and St. Patrick started its next series there.
Hudson King gained six yards on a pitch to the right before Noah Carlson took him down. Brady Leonard gained nine yards and a first down on a second down pitch to the left before he was stopped by Austin Jensen.
T.J. Rood stopped the Shamrock first down run for a one yard gain. Brady Leonard took a second down pitch to the left and gained six yards before Ethan Greene pushed him out of bounds. Cody Omo stopped the Shamrock third down run for a two yard loss. Noah Carlson’s timely hit caused St. Patrick’s receiver to drop a fourth down pass.
Montabella took over the ball on downs on its own 18 yard line.
Aiden Mosser stopped the Mustang first down run for no gain. Logan Krieger stopped the second down run for no gain. Gabe Kauffman took the ball to the right and gained nine yards on third down before Isaiah Rockey tackled him. Ben White stopped the Mustang fourth down run for a three yard loss.
St. Patrick took over the ball on downs on the Montabella 24 yard line.
Hudson King ran to the right and gained four yards before Mason Bogart took him down. Davis Peterson and T.J. Rood covered on the St. Patrick incomplete second down pass. Jerryd Scheurer took the ball to the right for a nineteen yard gain before Austin Jensen tackled him to prevent a touchdown. St. Patrick had first down on the Montabella one yard line.
An illegal procedure penalty pushed St. Patrick back five yards. Cody Omo got into the Shamrock backfield on second down and forced a three yard loss. Bryton Strohl and Cody Omo teamed up to stop the Shamrock third down run for a five yard loss.
That was the final play of the first quarter. St. Patrick held a 7-0 lead and had a fourth down with goal to go from the Montabella 14 yard line.
On the first play of the second quarter, Jerryd Scheurer tossed the ball to Tyler Thelen, who won a fierce battle with two Mustang defenders and came down with the ball for a fourteen yard touchdown reception. St. Patrick’s extra point kick failed.
With 11:52 remaining in the second quarter, St. Patrick had a 13-0 lead.
Ben White booted his kickoff to the Montabella ten yard line where T.J. Rood fielded it and gained four yards before James Miller tackled him. Montabella had a first down on its own 14 yard line.
Ben White stopped the St. Patrick first down run for no gain. Logan Krieger stopped the second down run for a one yard loss. On third down, Gabe Kauffman slung a pass to Austin Jensen for a forty-three yard gain. Ben White made the Shamrock tackle. Montabella had a first down on the St. Patrick 44 yard line.
Montabella completed a first down screen pass, but it resulted in a two yard loss. Gabe Kauffman sprinted out of the pocket and gained four second down yards before Aiden Mosser tackled him. Brady Leonard covered on Montabella’s incomplete third down pass. Brady Leonard intercepted the Mustang fourth down pass on the Shamrock 16 yard line where St. Patrick started its next series.
Hudson King gained seven yards on a first down run to the right before T.J. Rood pushed him out of bounds. Brady Leonard went up the left tackle for an eight yard gain and a first down. Mason Bogart got the Mustang tackle.
T.J. Rood stopped the Shamrock first down run for a one yard gain. On second down, Hudson King broke up the middle and gained nine yards and earned a first down before Austin Jensen and Mason Bogart stopped him.
Austin Jensen stopped the St. Patrick first down pitch to the right for a one yard gain. Brady Leonard took a second down pitch to the left and gained 42 yards before Austin Jensen forced him out of bounds. St. Patrick had a first down on the Montabella 16 yard line.
Hudson King went to the right and gained fifteen yards before Mason Bogart stopped him. St. Patrick was on the 1 yard line.
Brady Leonard took the ball through the middle for a one yard touchdown. St. Patrick faked a kick on the point after play, but holder Brady Leonard passed to Augustus Teachworth for a successful two point conversion to give the Shamrocks a 21-0 lead with 3:39 left in the opening half.
Ben White kicked the ball off to the Montabella 22 yard line where Brady Kieff fielded it and gained seven yards before Ben White took him down. Montabella started its series on its own 29 yard line.
A first down penalty gave Montabella fifteen yards.
Ethan Greene ran to the right and gained twenty-one yards before he ran into Mason Simon and Augustus Teachworth. Montabella had a first down in St. Patrick territory on the 35 yard line.
The Mustangs lost three yards on their first down run. On second down, Ethan Greene threw to Noah Carlson, who gained sixteen yards before Jerryd Scheurer pushed him out of bounds, but Montabella had another first down.
Ethan Greene threw to Bryce Willis for a four yard first down gain. Mason Simon got the tackle for St. Patrick. On second down, Ethan Greene ran to the left and gained two yards before Brady Leonard stopped his progress. Ethan Greene went to the middle and gained three third down yards before he was stopped by Aiden Mosser. Ethan Greene got chased out of the pocket on fourth down and gained five yards to give Montabella a first down on the St. Patrick 10 yard line.
Montabella spiked the ball on first down. Mason Simon covered on Montabella’s incomplete second down pass. On the final play of the first half, Brady Leonard intercepted a Mustang pass in the end zone. He aggressively ran out of the end zone. There was chaos all over the field as Montabella’s offense tried to tackle Brady Leonard. On their way to the end zone, Brady Leonard lateraled the ball to Jerryd Scheurer, who lateraled it to Charlie Thelen, who ran into the end zone for a Shamrock hundred yard interception return touchdown.
Cody Omo blocked the Shamrock extra point kick.
St. Patrick took a 27-0 lead into halftime. Your Bleacher Denizen uses all his accumulated experience from years of blogging these games to predict that when the third quarter opens, St. Patrick will still have a 27-0 lead.
St. Patrick introduced its seniors to the crowd at halftime. They followed up by saluting the fifth/sixth grade and seventh/eighth grade teams to the crowd.
It was time for the third quarter to start. Your Bleacher Denizen nearly dislocated his shoulder trying to pat himself on the back for predicting that the third quarter would open with St. Patrick being ahead 27-0.
Ben White opened the third quarter by kicking the ball off to the Montabella 10 yard line where Austin Jensen fielded it and gained sixteen yards before Aiden Mosser forced him out of bounds. Montabella started its opening series of the second half on its own 26 yard line.
Logan Krieger got into the Mustang backfield and stopped the first down run for a five yard loss. Ethan Green gained three yards on second down before Logan Krieger tackled him. Aiden Mosser and Caleb Pline teamed up to stop the Mustang third down run for a one yard loss. Cody Omo’s fourth down punt went out of bounds at the 50 yard line where St. Patrick started its next series.
Hudson King’s first down run up the right tackle gained two yards before Cody Omo stopped him. Brady Leonard ran to the left and dodged several tackles on his way to a nine yard second down gain. Cody Omo got the tackle for Montabella.
Cody Omo pressured St. Patrick into throwing an incomplete first down pass. Brady Leonard ran to the right and gained eleven yards before Austin Jensen pulled him down. St. Patrick had another first down.
Hudson King went to the left and gained seventeen yards before Noah Carlson and Austin Jensen forced him out of bounds. St. Patrick had a first down on the Montabella 12 yard line.
Brady Leonard went to the middle and gained seven yards on first down before Austin Jensen stopped him. On second down, Hudson King fought his way toward the goal and achieved a touchdown with a final dive.
Jerryd Scheurer tossed a point after pass to Caleb Pline to give St. Patrick a 35-0 lead with 7:28 remaining in quarter number three.
Ben White kicked the ball off to the Montabella 20 yard line where Ethan Greene caught the ball and gained nine yards before Aiden Mosser stopped him. Montabella had a first down on its own 29 yard line.
On the next play, Aiden Mosser intercepted a Mustang pass on the Montabella 24 yard line. St. Patrick started its next series there.
Hudson King went to the left on first down and gained five yards before Noah Carlson took him down. On the next play, Jerryd Scheurer passed to Charlie Thelen for a nineteen yard touchdown.
Charlie Thelen snapped the ball, Brady Leonard held the ball and Brody Beckhold booted the extra point to give St. Patrick a 42-0 lead with 5:08 to go in quarter number three.
Ben White boomed his kickoff into the end zone and Montabella started its series on its own 20 yard line.
Gavin Groothuis covered on Montabella’s incomplete first down pass. Ethan Greene completed a second down pass to Noah Carlson for a ten yard gain and a first down. Gavin Groothuis made the tackle for St. Patrick.
Brady Kieff went up the left tackle on first down and gained six yards before Nick Pung stopped him. Ethan Greene gained three yards on a second down run; Charlie Thelen made the tackle for St. Patrick. Charlie Thelen sacked the Mustang quarterback for a third down severn yard loss. On fourth down, Charlie Thelen sacked the Mustang quarterback for a four yard loss.
The third quarter ended here with St. Patrick holding a 42-0 lead.
Either your Bleacher Denizen or the people on the field lost track of downs. While I thought that St. Patrick had stopped Montabella on fourth down and would take over the ball, Montabella’s Cody Omo thought otherwise and punted the ball. The ball went out of bounds at the Mustang 44 yard line and St. Patrick started its next series there.
Brady Leonard dragged several tacklers down the field for a twenty-six yard gain. On the next play, Kaeden Brown sent up the middle for a thirteen yard gain to give St. Patrick a first down on the Mustang 5 yard line.
Kaeden Brown earned four of the five yards St. Patrick needed for a touchdown on first down. However, on the next play, Austin Jensen recovered a fumble for Montabella on the one yard line to foil the Shamrock bid for another touchdown.
Brady Kieff went to the right and gained six yards on first down before he was stopped by Aiden Mosser. On second down, Brady Kieff went to the left and gained two yards before Gavin Groothuis pulled him down. Augustus Teachworth stopped the Mustang third down run for no gain. On fourth down, Brady Kief went to the right to earn four yards and a first down.
On the next play, Gabe Kauffman heaved an eighty-seven yard touchdown pass to Austin Jensen. Gabe Kauffman passed to Austin Jensen for a successful two point conversion. With 4:56 remaining in the game, Montabella trimmed the St. Patrick lead to 42-8.
Cody Omo tried an onside kick for Montabella. Mason Simon fielded the ball on the Shamrock 48 yard line and gained five yards before Braydon Williamson tackled him. St. Patrick started its next series on the Montabella 47 yard line.
Brady Kieff recovered a Shamrock first down fumble and carried the ball about thirty-five yards before Jerryd Scheurer tackled him on the St. Patrick 14 yard line where Montabella started its next series.
Gabe Kauffman passed to Noah Carlson for a six yard first down gain. Brady Leonard made the tackle for St. Patrick. Brady Kieff’s second down run to the left gained three yards before he ran into Isaiah Rockey and Aiden Mosser. Ben White knocked the Mustang third down pass out of the air. On fourth down, Brady Kieff went to the middle and gained two yards to give Montabella a first down on the St. Patrick 3 yard line.
Austin Jensen gained two yards on a first down run up the middle. Chase Bengel made the stop for St. Patrick. On the next play, Gabe Kauffman ran for a one yard touchdown. Brady Kieff ran the ball in for the successful two point conversion to trim the Shamrock lead to 42-16 with 1:38 left on the clock.
Cody Omo kicked the ball off to the St. Patrick 15 yard line where Aiden Fandel fielded it and gained about twenty-three yards before Braydon Williamson tackled him.
Cody Omo stopped the St. Patrick first down run for no gain. St. Patrick took a knee on the final two plays of the game.
St. Patrick won this game by the final score of 42-16 to complete an undefeated regular season. Kudos also to the Montabella Mustangs, who finished their fine season with an 8-1 record.
