Portland St. Patrick at Webberville – – Girls Basketball – – The Bleacher Denizen – – January 19, 2026 – – by Chuck Krafft

Tonight, the BleacherDenizenMobile is pointed at Webberville High, where the Spartan Girls’ and Boys’ basketball teams will be hosting the Shamrocks from Portland St. Patrick. The girls will play first. Webberville’s girls bring a 5-5 record into this game while St. Patrick has a 7-1 record.

I’ve seen St. Patrick earlier this season. Coach Michelle Smith provided me with this information about her Shamrock players.

Grace Rockey is about as complete as a high school player can be. She is quick, fast and agile enough to play as a guard and tall and strong enough to compete in the post. This year, she has been focusing more on the post. She is a great ball handler who can hit three point shots and slash to the basket. She handles the ball and passes well. She is also a tough rebounder and a formidable defender and scorer in the post.

Macie Smith is a versatile defender who can cover people on the perimeter or in the post. She is a good passer and sees the floor well. She is a tough rebounder who can score on slashes to the basket. Lily Sandborn runs the point for the Shamrocks. She is a great perimeter defender who handles the ball and passes well. She is a threat to score on slashes to the basket.

Marian Davlin plays inside. She is a rugged post defender and rebounder who communicates well on defense. She scores mostly in the post on layups and putbacks. Macie Leonard is a freshman with strong guard skills and a good basketball IQ. She is a solid defender who handles the ball and passes well. She also brings a good three point shot to the Shamrocks.

Unfortunately, tonight, I learned that Mattie Honsowitz has injured her knee and will not be able to play for the rest of this season. She has provided great interior play for the Shamrocks for four years.

Webberville Coach Kayson Lycos gave me this information about his Spartan players.

Jolie Bryan is a guard who is an excellent shot blocker and solid perimeter defender. She is able to score from the three point line, in the midrange and on slashes to the basket. Jenna Lycos is a quick guard who defends the perimeter well. On offense, she runs the point; she handles the ball, sees the floor and passes well.

Lexi Proctor and Haley Proctor are strong defenders and rebounders in the post. Makayla Culver is an accurate three point shooter.

It is now time to review the results of this game through the occasionally accurate lenses of an Aging Bleacher Denizen who was never able to escape church league when he attempted to play in times past. It seems that the bricks he threw broke many of the ancient peach baskets that we ancient players shot at. It cost to much to keep the Bleacher Denizen on the team that he was asked to find another sport. (He was probably best at single item juggling.)

The opening tap is tied up. As the Possession Arrow is still getting out of bed, it does not see the play and the opening jump ball has to be redone. (Sometimes, it’s more fun to forget that the possession arrow had nothing to do with the opening jump ball being redone.) St. Patrick ignores the Bleacher Denizen’s odd humor and wins the opening tap.

The Shamrocks miss a driving layup. Lily Sandborn knocks the ball out of bounds; the Spartans retain possession. Marian Davlin knocks the ball away from Webberville, but the Spartans recover. Webberville misses a driving layup. St. Patrick misses an eight foot shot in the lane. Grace Rockey steals the ball for the Shamrocks. Lexi Proctor knocks the ball away from St. Patrick and Jenna Lycos picks it up for Webberville.

Webberville misses a fast break layup. Grace Rockey drives from the side and hits a layup to give St. Patrick the first two points of the game. She is fouled on the play, but misses her free throw. Macie Leonard knocks the ball away from Webberville and Grace Rockey picks it up for St. Patrick. The Shamrocks miss a threeball from the side. Macie Smith hits a putback to give St. Patrick a 4-0 lead.

Grace Rockey drives and hits an eight foot shot in the lane to retake the lead for St. Patrick. Webberville bounces a pass out of bounds. Morgan Krieger ties up a Webberville pass. The Possession Arrow is making its morning coffee and misses the play; the ball is awarded back to Webberville. The Spartans fumble a pass out of bounds. The Possession Arrow is cleaning up spilled hazelnut cream, but sees the play and awards the ball to the Shamrocks.

Lexi Proctor knocks the ball away from St. Patrick and Jolie Bryan picks it up for Webberville. The Spartans misfire on a triple try from the side. Morgan Krieger gets her hand on the ball and a Shamrock teammate picks it up. St. Patrick misses a heave just before the first quarter buzzer decides to end the quarter.

After one quarter, St. Patrick has a 12-8 lead.

Webberville has the ball to begin the second quarter. Jenna Lycos passes to Lexi Proctor, who spins and hits a layup for the Spartans. Macie Leonard passes to Lily Sandborn, who throws in a threeball from the wing for the Shamrocks to give St. Patrick a 15-10 lead.

The Shamrock press forces Webberville to throw the ball out of bounds. St. Patrick misses a three point shot from the corner. The rebound goes out of bounds and Webberville takes possession. Macie Leonard knocks a Spartan pass out of bounds; Webberville retains possession. The Spartans miss a three point shot from the wing. Makayla Culver knocks a Shamrock pass out of bounds and the Spartans take possession.

Webberville misses a jump shot from the free throw line. The rebound goes out of bounds and the Spartans get another opportunity. Jolie Bryan hits an eight foot shot from the side to trim the Shamrock lead to 15-12.

St. Patrick misses a three point shot from the side. Morgan Krieger pulls down the offensive rebound for the Shamrocks. St. Patrick misses a six foot banked shot from the side. Webberville is called for traveling. Macie Smith passes to Grace Rockey, who hits a three point shot from the side to give for St. Patrick. Lily Sandborn steals the ball for the Shamrocks. St. Patrick misses a layup. Marian Davlin is fouled on a putback and hits one of her two free throws to give St. Patrick a 19-12 lead with 4:59 remaining in the first half.

Alice Newman gets her hand on the ball for St. Patrick, but Webberville is able to recover.
