Today, your Bleacher Denizen is in Portland covering the baseball doubleheader between St. Patrick’s Shamrocks and the Ramblers of Perry. I also covered the first game of the doubleheader. It usually does not take much to confuse the Bleacher Denizen, but even though we are in Portland on the St. Patrick baseball field, St. Patrick will be the visiting team and bat first. Perry will be the home team and bat last. Somehow, everyone here except the Bleacher Denizen’s gets this mind-boggling situation, but I guess I need to go along and try to understand the best I can.

Here are the starting lineups. Charlie Thelen, who is an All-State player who has been recovering from a severe ankle injury will play catcher for the first time this season!

Jerryd Scheurer walked to lead off the top of the first inning for St. Patrick and stole second base. Charlie Thelen doubled to deep right field to drive Jerryd Scheurer home. Perry Pitcher Brady Doerner retired the next Shamrock batter on a popup to second base. Charlie Thelen went to third base on a wild pitch. Tyler Then walked and stole second base. Logan Howe doubled to deep right field to drive Charlie Thelen and Tyler Thelen home. Logan France made a fine running catch in left field to record the third St. Patrick out.

St. Patrick scored three runs in the top of the first inning to take a 3-0 lead.

Tyler Thelen retired the three Rambler hitters in the bottom of the first inning on a groundout to second base and two strikeouts.

Sean Fedewa walked to lead off the top of the second inning for St. Patrick and went to second base on a bad pickoff throw. Hudson King beat out a bunt single. Sean Fedewa advanced to third base on the play. Perry Second Baseman Scott Lynde covered at first base and made a great stretch to catch the ball and prevent an error that would have allowed a run to score. Hudson King stole second base. Sean Fedewa scored and Hudson King went to third base on an RBI groundout by Jerryd Scheurer.

Charlie Thelen fouled off a bunch of pitches and finally walked after thirteen pitches. Brady Doerner retired the next batter on a fly to second base. Charlie Thelen was deliberately caught off first base and got in a rundown that permitted Hudson King to score before he was finally tagged for the final out of the inning.

St. Patrick scored two runs in the top of the second inning to boost its lead to 5-0.

Tyler Thelen struck out the first two Perry hitters in the second inning. Scott Lynde was hit by a pitch. Shamrock Left Fielder Ben White made an excellent running catch to get the third Rambler out.

Brady Doerner retired the St. Patrick leadoff batter in the top of the third inning on a fly to right field. Logan France came in to pitch for Perry and Brady Doerner went out to left field.

Logan France struck out the next Shamrock batter and got the third out on a foul popup to the catcher.

Isaiah Rockey came in to pitch for St. Patrick. Tyler Thelen moved to first base and Brady Leonard moved from first base to second base.

Isaiah Rockey struck out the Perry leadoff batter. Second Baseman Brady Leonard made a great diving stop on a grounder up the middle by Tyler Whitbeck, but he was able to get to first base for an infield single. Tyger Whitbeck was out at second base and Isaiah Rockey safe at first base on a fielder’s choice grounder to the shortstop. Charlie Thelen fired a strike to second base to catch the runner stealing to record the third out.

Jerryd Scheurer walked to lead off the top of the fifth inning for St. Patrick and stole second base. Charlie Thelen was hit by a pitch. Jerryd Scheurer moved to third base and Charlie Thelen to second base when Brady Leonard beat out an infield single. Jerryd Scheurer scored, Charlie Thelen advanced to third base, Brady Leonard was out at second base and Tyler Thelen safe at first base on an RBI fielder’s choice groundout to the shortstop.

Tyler Thelen stole second base. Logan France retired the next Shamrock hitter on a fly to the shortstop. Logan Howe doubled to drive Charlie Thelen and Tyler Thelen home. Caleb Pline entered the game as a pinch runner for Logan Howe. Ben White walked. Isaiah Rockey singled to left field to drive Logan Howe home as Ben White advanced to third base.

Isaiah Rockey faked a steal of second base to draw a throw. He was caught in a rundown and Ben White broke for home. When Perry tried to stop the run from scoring, Ben White beat the throw and Isaiah Rockey made it to second base. Logan France struck out the next Shamrock hitter to end the inning.

St. Patrick scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning to boost its lead to 10-0.

Isaiah Rockey retired the three Perry batters in the bottom of the fifth inning on a strikeout, a fly to left field and a groundout to third base.

Because St. Patrick had a ten run lead after five full innings, the mercy rule was invoked and St. Patrick won the game.

Tyger Whitbeck had a single for Perry.

Brady Doerner pitched three and one third innings; Logan France pitched one and two thirds innings.

Logan Howe had two doubles and four RBI for St. Patrick. Charlie Thelen had a double and one RBI. Isaiah Rockey had one single and one RBI. Brady Leonard and Hudson King each had one single. Jerryd Scheurer and Tyler Thelen each had one RBI.

Tyler Thelen pitched three shutout innings and struck out four Perry hitters. Isaiah Rockey pitched two innings and struck out two batters.
