Mason at St. Johns – – Girls Basketball – – The Bleacher Denizen – – January 28, 2022 – – by Chuck Krafft

In one of my recent videos on my “Chuck Krafft” You Tube channel, I point out that you never know where the Red River Valley may lead you. Alas, it does not lead to St. Johns; fortunately, US-127 does lead to St. Johns, so I will be able to see the game where the Redwings host the Bulldogs from Mason in Girls Basketball. St. Johns holds a 2-2 record in the CAAC-Red Conference and is 3-8 overall. Mason is 1-3 in the CAAC-Red and 2-9 overall.

Here is the You Tube video that provided me with the questionable advice.

Both coaches were generous with their time and helped me with some background about their players. Mason Coach Jake Lator helped me with this information! Nevaeh Branson is an athletic player who provides strong perimeter defense. Reegyn Cady runs the point; she is a solid ball handler and active perimeter defender. Ava Clark is a fine passer who sees the floor well and is a threat from the three point line. Grace O’Berry is a fine athlete who can defend well either on the perimeter or in the post. She is also a fine rebounder and active cutter in the Bulldog offense.

Halley Kruizenga is a ball of energy who provides spark to the Mason perimeter defense. Ashlynn Putman patrols the post for the Bulldogs. She provides strong defense and rebounding; she is a scoring threat inside as well. Jocelyn Shattuck is a fine rebounder. Allison Wheeler is always hustling.

St. Johns Coach Joe Foster had this to say about his Redwing players. Josie Stehlik can the point for the Redwings. She is a fine ball handler who keeps the ball moving and is a solid perimeter defender. Claudia Paksi is a fine defense player in the post who rebounds and runs the pick and roll well. Alexis Maloney runs the point and is the team captain. She is in her third year of varsity basketball. She distributes the basketball well and provides quality defense whether she is asked to do it on the perimeter or in the post.

Isabel Thelen is a strong ball handler who provides great defensive energy for the Redwing press. She accumulates a lot of steals. Jocelyn Kotowicz has an excellent three point shot. She is able to handle the ball well with either hand and has an excellent basketball IQ.

I was here to see almost all the JV game. Mason took a 5-3 lead in the first quarter and held a10-7 lead at halftime. Mason outscored St. Johns 9-2 in the third quarter and 10-8 in the fourth quarter as they went on to a 29-17 win.

Paityn Chant led the St. Johns JVs with 7 points. Karber Addisen and Abigail deRosia each added 3 points. Mariah Poff and Abigail Hendy each had 2 points.

Ava Ruster led the victorious Mason JVs with 11 points. Tori Lator supported her with 7 points. Allison Wheeler put in 5 points. McKenzie Lockwood scored 4 points and Sydney Roche tallied 2 points.

It is now time to look at the events of the varsity game through the occasionally open eyes of an aging Bleacher Denizen who was never able to escape church league when he attempted to hoop in the days of yore. The varsity coach saw the Bleacher Denizen destroy dozens of the peach baskets we used to shoot at with his bricks. Sadly, this ended his varsity career; it also caused a national peach basket shortage – – but I digress.
