Pittsford at Camden-Frontier – – Girls Basketball – – The Bleacher Denizen – – February 22, 2022 – – by Chuck Krafft

Tonight, the Bleacher Denizen’s ongoing journey takes him to Camden-Frontier High School. (Someday, I hope to complete the applications and paperwork necessary to refer to my journey as an “odyssey.” Alas, as of now, I’m still a mere traveler.) On my “Chuck Krafft” You Tube Channel, I have observed that one never knows where the Red River Valley will lead you. For those of you who are curious, the piano will take you on a journey (but not an odyssey.)

Tonight will be a big night in the Camden-Frontier gym. It’s Veteran’s Appreciation night; the students at Camden-Frontier High have been raising money to give to the four American Legion Posts in various ways including selling Commemorative T-Shirts and Go Fund Me campaigns. I spoke with Camden-Frontier Coach Jordan Stevenson before the game; he told me that the campaign has already raised over $2000 to be given to the four posts.

Of course, if the Bleacher Denizen is here, there will be a basketball game. Camden-Frontier’s Redskin Girls will be hosting the Wildcats from Pittsford. Camden-Frontier enters the game with a 6-4 record in the SCAA-East and is 8-8 overall. They are led by their only senior, Dakota Sigler, who is tall and strong in the post, but also is able to do a lot of the ball handling. Her size and strength allow her to score consistently in the post. She can also hit the outside shot when needed.

Her sister, Lexus Sigler, also is a tough defender, rebounder and scorer in the post. Recently, she had a 20 point game against Jackson Christian. Jaden Clark runs the point on offense; she is a solid ball handler and passer. On defense, she is a tough perimeter defender who gets a lot of steals. Karley McKibbin is a versatile player who can defend well and score either on the perimeter or in the post. She has a solid midrange jump shot. Rosemarie Cabrera is a freshman who brings a lot of energy to the Redskin perimeter defense and slashes well to the basket.

The Pittsford Wildcats have a 14-1 record in the SCAA-East and are 15-3 overall. I’ve been blogging their games for a few years now and one constant element is the persistent, hard-working Wildcat defense and press. Freshman Ava Mallar has had a number of 20 point games so far. She runs the point and plays the tough defense required of all the Wildcat players. She is a versatile scorer who can hit the three point shot, score from mid-range and slash to the basket. Emily Pidd is a ferocious perimeter defender who can shoot from the three point line.

Kaitlyn Cole is the team captain. She is another strong defender who gets many steals; she is also a threat from the three point line and is one of the best Wildcat rebounders despite being only 5’3″. Elaina Kuenzer covers the middle where she is a fine post defender and rebounder.

I was able to see the entire JV game. The teams started slowly on offense; at halftime, Pittsford got out to a 3-2 first quarter lead and led 8-6 at halftime. In the third quarter, Camden-Frontier (hereafter known as C-F most of the time to save the aging Bleacher Denizen’s fingers from carpal tunnel) outscored Pittsford 8-5 to take a 14-13 lead. Pittsford stopped C-F from scoring any points in the fourth quarter as they scored nine; they won the JV game 22-14.

Alisyn Friskney and Rosemarie Cabrera led the C-F JV scoring with 4 points each. Chloe Ward, Lina Koehm and Harlee Groves all tallied 2 points.

Riley McCumber led the Pittsford JV scoring with 19 points. Karlee Embach had 2 points and Savannah Watkins scored 1 point.

The C-F band led by Kristen Watters did an excellent job playing the Redskin Fight Song. After some remarks telling the crowd of the Benefit project, they played the four service anthems. As they heard the appropriate anthem, Army Veterans, Navy Veterans Air Force Veterans and Marine Veterans took their turn standing so the crowd could honor them.

After this, the C-F choir, also led by Kristen Watters did a beautiful four part harmony rendition of our National Anthem. It was one of the best National Anthem performances I have ever heard at a high school game.

(As I am still a part-time professional musician, I always enjoy saluting high school musicians singing and/or playing well.) For those who are curious, here is one of my original songs from my You Tube Channel.
