Portland St. Patrick at Lansing Christian – – Boys Basketball – – The Bleacher Denizen – – February 25, 2022 – – by Chuck Krafft

Today was an interesting day for your Bleacher Denizen. I was going to do a game at Pewamo-Westphalia tonight, but with the snow, and especially after some real problems driving in snow last weekend, I chickened out about making the snowy drive at night on Grange Road. Lansing Christian is the closest high school to my house; they were playing Portland St. Patrick, so it was an obvious decision to come to this game tonight.

This afternoon, as I left the house to do an errand, my glasses, which had been slowly starting to fall apart, decided to cry for help. A mini-glasses screw fell out of the frame and cleverly hid itself in my carpet, so I added an errand of getting the glasses fixed. Meijer does not do glasses any more, but Walmart of all places fixed them for free. I guess this afternoon’s score was Bleacher Denizen 1 Glasses 0. (Even though I have worn glasses since I was nine, I still don’t really like wearing them.)

After doing a couple other semi-emergency errands, your Bleacher Denizen was able to finally get home and make the one mile trip to Lansing Christian. I’m proud to report that although the weather was quite cold, there were no driving mishaps. (Perhaps, they should name my route to Lansing Christian as “the miracle mile.”)

The Pilgrims from Lansing Christian enter this game with a 4-13 record. Before you make any assumptions, I will tell you that Lansing Christian is the only Division 4 team in a league with three teams (out of seven) in Division 2 and three teams in Division 3. To put it mildly, Lansing Christian plays a very challenging schedule.

Elijah Ellis runs the point for the Pilgrims. He is a fine ball handler who distributes the ball well and is a tough perimeter defender. Caden Kinnas and Benjamin Sullivan excel shooting the three point shot. Timothy Sullivan is a great rebounder who can slash to the basket. He is a good defender in the post or on the perimeter; he has a knack for drawing charging fouls. (I think I may have just gotten a bruise just thinking about the charging fouls. YEOWWW!)

Baylor Brogan defends and rebounds well in the post. He is excellent at running the floor on the fast break as well. Judah Schafer slashes to the basket effectively. Samuel Israel plays tough defense in the post. Noah Link helps out at the point guard position; he is generally able to keep things running when Elijah Ellis is not in the game. Dylan Kinnas is athletic and can hit the three point shot. August Granger is a tall guy who plays solid defense in the post and scores a lot of layups (and some dunks.)

The Shamrocks from Portland St. Patrick have a 2-14 record coming into the game. Again, I’ll point out that their record is misleading as well. They play almost all of their games in the rugged CMAC which has six really good Division 3 teams as well as Division 4 powers Fulton and Fowler.

Cole Kinsman runs the point for the Shamrocks. He is a good ball handler; on defense, he is really active and gets a lot of deflections; he also forces a lot of turnovers. Derec Fedewa is athletic and can score either with an accurate jump shot or on slashes to the basket. Shane Cook has a lot of varsity experience. He is a fine athlete who can handle the ball, score from the outside, slash to the basket and defend ferociously on the perimeter.

Alex Fedewa is a good defender and rebounder in the post. He is also a threat to slash to the basket or snipe away from the three point line. Braxton Teachworth is an athlete. In fact, he is probably the most athletic player on the floor in a lot of the Shamrock games. He is a quick jumper who can soar; he is a threat to block any shot. He also scores a lot on putbacks.

Payton Russman is a fine perimeter defender who can hit the three point shot; he also attacks the basket with no fear. Brayden Simon is a freshman who was already a varsity athlete as an eighth grader; he started on St. Patrick’s district-winning baseball team last year. He slashes to the basket well and can hit the three point shot. Landon Simpson is a good ball handler who is an energetic perimeter defender.

It is now time to report on the events of this game through the bleary, but frequently open eyes of an aging Bleacher Denizen who was never able to escape church league when he attempted to play basketball in the medieval days when many considered him to be “young.” Your Bleacher Denizen never developed the strength to accurately shoot the cannon balls that served as basketballs back in the day.

As there is no halftime entertainment, I hope to provide some here with videos from my “Chuck Krafft” You Tube Channel. As both schools are Christian schools, I will take the liberty of providing three You Tube videos of songs from my religious CD! Two of them show only pictures, as I had not started doing videos of me singing and playing the songs yet.

Here’s an original song called “John 3:16”. This one is special to me because my father who has gone off to heaven helped write over half the lyrics to this song.

This one, “Christ’s Army” sounds like a Beach Boys or Jan and Dean song, but the words and music are original. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GN0-4a2TpaI

Here’s an old classic where you can actually see me singing and playing the piano. “Just a Closer Walk with Thee” has been one of my live performance favorites for years!

(For anyone who are interested, there are two other original religious songs on my channel.)

OK. Usually I try to keep the focus on the players. It’s time to get away from my cry for attention and get back to watching the players play the second half of this competitive game!!

Those of you who point out that the Bleacher Denizen’s jumping ability in his youth was comparable to a hippopotamus with a sprained ankle are just being cynical!!)
