Dansville at Pewamo-Westphalia – – CMAC Boys Game of the Week – – The Bleacher Denizen – – February 10, 2023 – – by Chuck Krafft

Tonight, your Bleacher Denizen is off to Pewamo-Westphalia to watch as the P-W Pirates host the Aggies from Dansville.

Frequently, the drive on Grange Road to Westphalia can be icy and challenging; your Bleacher Denizen had nice, dry roads tonight!

While we wait for the game to start, here is a video of my original country tune sung by an excellent country singer, Mark Wilcox! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PURLmxT_3Q

The Dansville Aggies are 5-3 in the CMAC and 8-7 overall. This is a bit misleading as five of their losses were in the first five games of the season. Since then, Dansville is 8-2.

Drew Frantz is a creative scorer who can figure out many ways to get the ball in the basket when he drives. He is also a strong three point shooter. Calvin vanHartesvelt is a tough defender in the post who blocks a lot of shots and rebounds well. He also has the height and post moves to score in the lane. Cody Ream is a fine ball handler and perimeter defender who can slash to the basket.

Elijah Neal and Zachary Sykes are strong defenders on the perimeter; both of them can slash to the basket and hit a three point shot. Dylan Ream is a versatile player with the height to defend in the post and the quickness to defend on the perimeter. He can score on three point shots or on slashes to the basket.

The Eklund brothers give Pewamo-Westphalia a lot of star power. Senior Jamison Eklund is considered one of the top one hundred high school players in Michigan by Mick McCabe from the Detroit Free Press. He is about 6’6″ and reminds me of the tall guys who used to send the Bleacher Denizen’s layups to the Great Airball in the Sky!!

He does all the excellent work you’d expect from a tall player his size in the post. He is a fine rebounder and defender in the lane. He scores well there. However, he also handles the ball as well as most guards and is a great shooter from the three point line as well. (P.S. I don’t think I’ve used the “Great Airball in the Sky” line since Brandon Johns graduated from East Lansing about five years ago, but Jamison Eklund is a fine player in his own right.)

Grady Eklund is a freshman point guard who is about 6’3″. He is very quick and uses his length to be a fine perimeter defender. He handles the ball and passes is well. He can either take the ball to the basket or hit three point shots. Luke Smith and Kash Pohl are fine perimeter defenders who have strong three point shots. Ben Smith is a “glue guy” who screens well, defends in the paint and rebounds well.

When I got to the gym, I learned that Jamison Eklund has 982 points in his career so far, so if he scores 18 tonight, he will have 1000 points! This makes for an exciting week for the Bleacher Denizen. In St. Ignace Monday night, he got to witness this historic performance by Engadine’s Leah French! https://thebleacherdenizen.com/2023/02/07/engadine-at-st-ignace-girls-basketball-the-bleacher-denizen-february-7-2023-by-chuck-krafft/

Hopefully there could be another big moment for The Bleacher Denizen blog to record tonight!

Cody Fox and Brayton Thelen each scored 6 points. Trevor Smith and Rylee Arthur each put in 4 points. Henrik Waltersdorf tallied 2 points.

The Pewamo-Westphalia pep band entertained before the game and did a fine job on a number of tunes that your Bleacher Denizen remembers from growing up in those ancient days called the 1960s! Paint it Black by the Rolling Stones and I Wanna Hold Your Hand by the Beatles were two of my favorites!

It is now time to look at the events of the varsity game through the occasionally clear lenses of an Aging Bleacher Denizen who was never able to escape church league when he attempted to play basketball in ancient times. Once the basketball powers that be refused to allow him to wear a rocket belt to aid his jumping, all his grand basketball plans were toast.

And for those of you who are not at the game and can’t see the ceremony or hear the music, here is an old Western Classic tune from my You Tube Channel. (Yes, Country and Western were separate music styles at one time.) Hopefully my yodeling is reasonably good!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BlPaiHsbOnA
