Dansville at Fowler – – Baseball Doubleheader – – First Game – – The Bleacher Denizen – – April 20, 2023 – – by Chuck Krafft

Today, the Dansville Aggies are visiting the Fowler Eagles for a baseball doubleheader. It’s a bit cold and occasional drops of rain are dotting the field (as well as my notes.) Your Bleacher Denizen is fortunately not the Witch from the Wizard of Oz and thus can cope with the drizzle.

Here are the starting lineups for tonight’s first game. Fowler is the home team and Dansville will bat first.

It is now time to review this game from the perspective of a Bleacher Denizen who never played varsity baseball. Alas, his pitching career was ruined when the powers that be ruled that he would not be able to use a bazooka to propel his pitches across the state. I guess that the powers that be can be lacking in imagination – – – but I digress.

Evan Curtiss struck out the Aggie leadoff hitter in the top of the first inning and retired Zachary Sykes on a hot line drive to first base. Cody Ream lined a single to left field and stole second base. Evan Curtiss retired the next batter on a grounder to shortstop to end the inning.

In a deja vu moment, Wyatt Mosley struck out the Eagle leadoff batter in the bottom of the first inning. He retired the next hitter on a grounder to the shortstop. Sam Vanneste beat out an infield single. He took second base on an errant pickoff play. Evan Curtiss singled to right field to drive in Sam Vanneste. Noah Schafer entered the game to pinch run for Evan Curtiss. Wyatt Mosley retired the next batter on a bunt to the mound to end the inning.

Fowler scored one run in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.

Evan Curtiss struck out all three of the Dansville hitters in the top of the second inning.

Adyn O’Rourke walked to lead off the top of the second inning for Fowler. He advanced to second base when Conner Katich was safe on a bunt single. Adyn O’Rourke went to third base and Conner Katich to second on a wild pitch. Wyatt Mosley struck out the next Eagle batter and retired the subsequent hitter on a line drive to second base. Carter Lance was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Mitchell Wirth singled to right field to drive in Adyn O’Rourke and Conner Katich. Carter Lance advanced to third base. Carter Lance scored and Mitchell Wirth went all the way to third base on a wild pitch. Sam Vanneste drew a walk. Wyatt Mosley struck out the next batter to end the inning.

Fowler scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning to push its lead to 4-0.

Quentin Mayes drew a walk to lead off the top of the third inning for Dansville. Evan Curtiss struck out the next batter. Dylan Ream singled and advanced to second base. Quentin Mayes took third base when Zachary Sykes was safe at first base on a fielder’s choice grounder to the second baseman. (The runner was out at second base.) Zachary Sykes stole second base. Fowler Shortstop Sam Vanneste reacted quickly to catch a liner off the bat of Cody Ream for the third out.

Wyatt Mosley struck out the first two Fowler hitters in the bottom of the third inning. Conner Katich grounded a single to right field. Wyatt Mosley struck out the next batter to end the inning.

Evan Curtiss struck out all three Dansville hitters in the top of the fourth inning.

Quentin Mayes came in to pitch for Dansville. Austin Hovey went to second base. Dylan Ream moved to shortstop. Nathan Sherwood took over at third base. Shane Braughton moved to right field. Wyatt Mosley moved to left field. Cody Ream took over at catcher.

Quentin Mayes retired the Fowler leadoff batter in the bottom of the fourth inning on a grounder to third base. Carter Lance drew a walk. He stole second base and advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Mitchell Wirth drew a walk and stole second base. Sam Vanneste singled to drive Carter Lance and Mitchell Wirth home. Sam Vanneste stole second base. Evan Curtiss drew a walk. Noah Schafer came in as a courtesy runner for Evan Curtiss. Quentin Mayes retired the next batter on a fly to second base.

Adyn O’Rourke was hit by a pitch. Dylan Ream made a fine catch running back into the outfield from his shortstop position to record the third Eagle out.

Fowler scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend its lead to 6-0,

Nathan Sherwood singled to center field to open the top of the fifth inning for Dansville. He went to second base on a wild pitch. Evan Curtiss struck out the next Aggie hitter and retired the next two batters on a groundout to the second baseman and a popup where Eagle third baseman Hudson Schlak made a fine catch running in toward home plate.

Quentin Mayes struck out the Fowler leadoff batter in the bottom of the fifth inning. The next hitter was out on a bunt where Catcher Cody Ream quickly got up from behind the plate to throw him out. Quentin Mayes struck out the next Eagle hitter to end the inning.

Evan Curtiss set the three Aggie hitters in the top of the sixth inning down on a fly to left field, a strikeout and a fly to the shortstop.

Quentin Mayes struck out the Fowler leadoff batter in the bottom of the sixth inning. Sam Vanneste bounced a single up the middle and stole second base. Sam Vanneste took third base on Evan Curtiss’ bounce out to third base. Quentin Mayes got the third Eagle out on a fly to center field.

After six innings, Fowler had a 6-0 lead.

Wyatt Mosley drew a walk to lead off the seventh inning for Dansville. Adyn O’Rourke came in to pitch for Fowler. Evan Curtiss moved to first base.

Wyatt Mosley was out at second and Nathan Harmon safe at first on a fielder’s choice grounder to the second baseman. The runner moved off the bag at first and was called out. Adyn O’Rourke struck out the next Aggie hitter to end the game.

Fowler won the opening game of this doubleheader by the score of 6-0.

Dylan Ream, Cody Ream and Nathan Sherwood each had a single for Dansville.

Wyatt Mosley pitched three innings and struck out six batters. Quentin Mayes pitched three innings and struck out three batters.

Sam Vanneste had three singles and two RBI for Fowler. Conner Katich had two singles. Mitchell Wirth had a single and two RBI. Evan Curtiss had a single and one RBI.

On the mound, Evan Curtiss pitched six and one third innings of shutout ball. He struck out ten batters.

Adyn O’Rourke finished the shutout by pitching two thirds of an inning and striking out one.
