Goodrich at Frankenmuth – – Girls Basketball – – The Bleacher Denizen – – December 19, 2023 – – by Chuck Krafft

Tonight, there is a Martian invasion happening in Frankenmuth. Fortunately, these are not space creatures, but the Goodrich Martian basketball team. However, with a 4-0 record, these Martians pack quite an athletic punch! The Frankenmuth Eagles enter the game with a 3-0 record so one team will fall from the ranks of the unbeaten after this game.

As we wait for the game to start, I hope you will enjoy this original tune from my You Tube Channel. It tells “the rest of the story” in regard to the tragic incident involving Grandma and the reindeer!

The last time I saw these two teams play, they were in the 2023 State Semifinals!

Goodrich Coach Jason Gray was generous with his time and provided this information about his 2023-24 Martians. Ella Place is a returning starter from last year’s semifinalists. She is an excellent perimeter defender and ball handler who is a big threat from the three point line. Tanner Schramm is an excellent rebounder, defender and scorer in the post. She is also a threat from the three point line. Kayla Hairston is a quick sophomore who is a threat to slash to the basket or hit three point shots.

Lucy Rafferty is an energetic perimeter defender who runs the floor well and is good at slashing to the baseket. Baylor Lauinger is a versatile freshman who can defend in the post or on the perimeter. On offense, she is an excellent ball handler who can score in the post or shoot jumpers out to the three point line.

Frankenmuth Coach Joe Jacobs was also really helpful with information about his Eagle players. Mia McLaughlin is a returning point guard from last year’s finalists. She is tall for a guard and really quick on defense on the perimeter. On offense, she handles the ball well, runs the team and is a good scorer driving to the basket or from the three point line.

Clare Conzelmann is another returning starter from last year. She is an excellent leader and a tall, athletic perimeter defender that gets a lot of steals. Her defense gets her a lot of fast break layups; she is also a good outside shooter. Rosemary Brenner is a fine leader with an excellent basketball IQ. She is also a tough perimeter defender. Izzy Bernthal is an excellent rebounder with a nose for the ball. She is also a returning starter. She has a solid jump shot and is a big threat from the free throw line.

Grace Brenner is Rosemary’s sister and also has a strong basketball IQ. She is a great on-ball defender who gets a lot of steals. Kierstyn Bully is an energetic perimeter defender who causes chaos to opposing offenses. Lucy Conzelmann is a fine perimeter defender.

I got to the JV game in time to see all of it. The first half was a defensive struggle as the teams were tied 1-1 after one quarter and 9-9 at halftime. Ayannah Jackson had 6 points to lead the Martian JV. Lily May added 5 points. Brookelyn Webb added 3 points. Sophie Sanson and Cece Wilson each tossed in 2 points. Carly Reid tallied 1 point.

Addie Bickel led the victorious Eagle JVs with 9 points. Nyla Sholten and Mya Donovan each contributed 6 points. Chloe Comstock had 2 points.

It is now time to review the events of this game through the somewhat (hopefully) alert eyes of an Aging Bleacher Denizen who was never able to escape church league when he attempted to play basketball in the days of yore. Unfortunately, your Bleacher Denizen was not able to fully comprehend that his coach was NOT complimenting him when discussing “matador defense.” (For you young’uns, that phrase can be googled. I assure you, the Bleacher Denizen’s coach was not being complimentary about his defense.)

I suppose, with a lifetime of experience since those days, I have figured out that the final straw regarding my playing time is the incident where my matador defense allowed someone by and I yelled “Ole” and made a “come in” hand gesture as he zipped in for a layup.
