Portland St. Patrick vs. Bellevue – – Boys Basketball – – District Tournament Semifinal – – The Bleacher Denizen – – February 28, 2024 – – by Chuck Krafft

Tonight, we are in Bellevue where the Broncos will host the Shamrocks from Portland St. Patrick in the Division 4 District semifinal.

While we get ready for the game to start, I hope you will enjoy this rendition of “Amazing Grace” from my You Tube Channel!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blOrsQkhhf0

Bellevue won the SCAA-West Conference this year and has a 16-4 record entering this game. This is the first time I have covered a Bronco game this year. Coach Joe Costello was really helpful with information about his players.

Caleb Betz runs the point for the Broncos. He is a solid ball handler and slasher who is great at slashing to the basket to score. He is also a solid three point shooter. Connor Odette is an excellent on-ball perimeter defender. Noah Loren is a tough defender and rebounder in the post. Caleb Dahlem is a fine perimeter defender who is excellent at getting out on the fast break.

Seth Keson is a strong perimeter defender. He also contributes as a midrange and three point shooter. Carson Dahlem is a fine defender on the perimeter. Levi Hughes is a strong defender and rebounder in the post. Nathan Payne has an accurate three point shot and Brady Payne is a good rebounder. I’d also like to acknowledge Chase Graham, who was the Bronco leading scorer and rebounder last year as a sophomore, but missed this entire season with an injury. I hope he gets back for his senior year!

Portland St. Patrick finished in a tie for fourth place in the rugged CMAC this year and enter the game with an 11-11 record. Brayden Simon is an excellent athlete with the size and strength to patrol the middle for the Shamrocks. He is also fast enough to cover players on the perimeter. He is a solid three point shooter who can also slash to the basket and overpower opponents to hit putbacks. Jerryd Scheurer is a freshman point guard in his second year of starting for the Shamrocks. He is a quick and athletic defender on the perimeter who can shoot the three point shot or slash to the basket. He is also a fine ball handler and passer who runs the offense well.

Brady Leonard defends well on the perimeter and is a threat from the three point line. Charlie Thelen is a strong post scorer who can either attack the basket or hit shots from the three point line. Landon Simpson is a fine athlete and perimeter defender. His ball handling and passing skills essentially give St. Patrick a second point guard. He is also a solid three point shooter who can get to the basket. Devin Cook is a strong rebounder and defender in the post. Nathan Fears is an excellent on ball defender.

It is now time to review the events of this game through the occasionally observant eyes of an Aging Bleacher Denizen who was never able to escape church league. While many people criticized the Bleacher Denizen’s lateral quickness, in my defense, I’ll point out that the Roman Sandals we wore with our uniforms in the ancient times when I tried to play interfered with most players’ movement.

Olivia Wing started off the evening by singing the National Anthem. I’m a musician myself and know a good performance when I hear one! Her pitch was excellent and I loved that she did not add a lot of frills to the melody. Nice job, Olivia!!!
