Tonight, your Bleacher Denizen will make a short drive to Dansville to watch the Aggies’ boys basketball game with the Webberville Spartans. (Wouldn’t a “trek” sound cooler than a “short drive”? I need to check the blogging manual and learn the minimum requirements so I can refer to my drives as “treks.”)

The Dansville Aggies enter this game with a 5-7 record. Here are a few of the Aggies who will be playing tonight.

Drew Frantz is a clever, creative scorer who can score on floaters and runners over the trees in the lane or get hot from the three point line. He is a solid ball handler and perimeter defender as well. Calvin vanHartesvelt is a fierce post defender who is able to rebound well and score well in the post. Cody Ream, who usually runs the point for the Aggies is a strong ball handler and perimeter defender who can slash to the basket.

Elijah Neal and Zachary Sykes are strong defenders on the perimeter who slash to the basket well and give the Aggies additional threats from the three point line. Dylan Ream is a versatile player who is tall enough to play and defend in the post and quick enough to play and defend on the perimeter as well. He slashes to the basket well and can hit the three point shot.

The Webberville Spartans enter this game with a 5-10 record. Coach Tony Rhodes provided me with this information about his players. He also commended JV Coach Kayson Lycos and specifically complimented his work ethic.

Chase Abner is a tall, athletic player who can defend inside or outside and has a great three point shot. Dylan Rhodes is a freshman who runs the point and gets many assists while committing few turnovers. Caleb Howard was a force in the post, but he has injured his ACL and will not play tonight. Tate Mills is a tough, competitive perimeter defender. Kevin Farmer is an active post player who scores, rebounds and defends well near the basket. Daxten Feguer is a solid three point shooter.

John Coe is a spirited perimeter defender who gets a lot of deflections. Drew Peckens is a team captain whose hustle in every situation including practice spurs the team to greater efforts.

When I arrived, it was halftime of the JV game. Webberville had a 28-22 lead at halftime. They stayed on top the entire second half and the Spartans ended up with a 51-38 win.

Wyatt Mosley led the Aggie JVs with 15 points. Quentin Mayes and Nathan Sherwood each added 7 points. Joe McMillan scored 3 points. Cole Hagelberger, Austin Hovey and Brian Bradley each put in 2 points.

Brodee Tyler led the victorious Spartan JVs with 18 points. Josh Boschma joined his teammate in double figures with 10 points and Michael Bialke chipped in with 9 points. Karson Lycos added 6 points. Kyle Kubiak scored 5 points and Kaleb Matiyow had 3 points.

It is now time to look at the events of the varsity game through the occasionally vigilant eyes of an aging Bleacher Denizen who was never able to escape church league when he attempted to hoop in the days of yore. Alas, when the basketball powers that be ruled that the Bleacher Denizen could not insist that opposing players wear ankle weights, his ability play tight defense was curtailed drastically.

Webberville wins the opening tap. Drew Frantz steals the ball, is fouled on a fast break layup and hits two free throws to give Dansville a 2-0 lead just 26 seconds after the game started.

Dansville finally snaps the Groundhog Day-esque succession of three point shots from the side by missing a driving layup. Your Bleacher Denizen is relieved that he is not living in a time warp. Zachary Sykes ignores the Bleacher Denizen’s angst and steals the ball for the Aggies. Austin Johnson continues to ignore the Bleacher Denizen’s angst and steals the ball for the Spartans. Your Bleacher Denizen pats his wallet just to make sure that basketballs are the only thing being stolen in this on-court crime wave.
