Pewamo-Westphalia at Portland St. Patrick – – First Game – – Softball Doubleheader – – The Bleacher Denizen – – May 2, 2022 – – by Chuck Krafft

Well, after about a month hiatus since basketball ended in late March, it is time for the Bleacher Denizen to rise from the ashes like the Phoenix to do a couple softball games. Unfortunately, because the Bleacher Denizen could not figure out whether to use the ashes from oak, maple or last night’s overcooked dinner, we may not accomplish the “ash rise thing”. I really wish that the Phoenix Manual had provided guidance on this point.

In today’s double header, the Pirates from Pewamo-Westphalia will face the Shamrocks from Portland St. Patrick in a clash between the two top softball teams in the CMAC.

For the first game, St. Patrick will be the home team. Here are the lineups:

Brooke Kramer led off the game in a dramatic fashion by booming a home run over the outfield fence to start P-W off with a 1-0 lead. Brynn Bauer lined a single to left field. Brynn Bauer took third base on Brooke Spitzley’s single. Brooke Spitzley stole second base. Carli Huhn lined a single to right field to drive in Brynn Bauer and Brooke Spitzley.

Rylee Scheurer struck out the next hitter to get the first out of the inning. Jenna Pung singled to left field; Carli Huhn advanced to second base. Rylee Scheurer got the next hitter out on a popup to the mound; she was able to double a runner off base to end the inning.

After one half of an inning, Pewamo-Westphalia had a 3-0 lead.

Rylee Scheurer singled on a swinging bunt to open the bottom of the first inning for the Shamrocks. She stole second base and scored on Carly Scheurer’s line drive single to center field. P-W Catcher Olivia Black made a fine through to second base to catch the runner trying to steal. Lydia Meredith drew a walk and stole second. P-W Pitcher Lauren Martin struck out the next batter. After Lydia Meredith stole third base, Lauren Martin struck out the next batter to end the inning.

St. Patrick closed the P-W lead to 3-1 after one inning.

Rylee Scheurer struck out the first two P-W hitters in the top of the second inning. Brooke Kramer beat out a single to the shortstop. Rylee Scheurer got the final out of the inning on a ground ball to first base.

Lauren Martin retired the St. Patrick leader in the top of the second inning on a bouncer to the pitcher. She struck out the next Shamrock batter. Tori Sandborn singled and stole second base before Lauren Martin struck out the next hitter to end the inning.

Brooke Spitzley led off the P-W third inning with a single to center field. The next batter was out on a foul popup to third base. Brooke Spitzley stole second base. Brooke Spitzley took third base on Olivia Black’s groundout to the shortstop. Shamrock Catcher Addie Scheurer made a quick, alert play to prevent P-W from scoring on a wild pitch. Rylee Scheurer retired the next batter on a grounder to the mound to end the inning.

Lauren Martin struck out the Shamrock leadoff hitter in the bottom of the third inning. The next hitter was out on a bouncer to the mound. Lydia Meredith was safe at first base on an error and stole second base. Lauren Martin retired the final St. Patrick batter of the third inning on a grounder to the mound.

Rylee Scheurer struck out the first two Pirate batters in the top of the fourth inning and go the third out on a foul popup to the catcher.

Lauren Martin retired the St. Patrick fourth inning leadoff batter on a ground ball to third base. Addie Scheurer was safe at first base on an error. Natalee Teachworth lined a single to left field and Addie Scheurer moved up to third base. Natalee Teachworth stole second base. Tori Sandborn singled to center field. Addie Scheurer scored and Natalee Teachworth went to third base. After Tori Sandborn stole second base, Laynie Meredith walked to load the bases.

Rylee Scheurer doubled down the third base line to drive in Natalee Teachworth and Tori Sandborn. Laynie Meredith advanced to third base. Carly Scheurer singled to center field to drive in Laynie Meredith and Rylee Scheurer. Carly Scheurer stole second base. Lauren Martin struck out the next Shamrock batter. Carly Scheurer went to third base on a wild pitch. Emma Honsowitz walked and never quit running as she got all the way to second base. Carly Scheurer scored as P-W tried to make a play at second base. Lauren Martin struck out the next batter to end the fourth inning.

St. Patrick scored six runs to take a 7-3 lead after four innings.

Brooke Kramer beat out a slow roller to third base to lead off the fifth inning for Pewamo-Westphalia. Brooke Kramer stole second base. Brynn Bauer singled on a ground ball to the shortstop; Brooke Kramer held up at second base. Brooke Spitzley’s groundout to first base sent Brooke Kramer and Brynn Bauer to third base and second base. Carli Huhn hit a sharp grounder that got past the shortstop and rolled all the way to the centerfield fence for a double to drive in Brooke Kramer and Brynn Bauer.

P_W scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning to trim the Shamrock lead to 7-5.

Rylee Scheurer retired the next batter on a fly to right field. Macy Noel entered the game to pinch run. Rylee Scheurer got the third Pirate out on a grounder to the pitcher.

Addie Scheurer walked to lead off the fifth inning for St. Patrick. Pirate centerfielder Brooke Spitzley made a nice snow cone catch of Natalee Teachworth’s long drive. Addie Scheurer moved to second base when Tori Sandborn beat out an infield single. Addie Scheurer was out at third base; Tori Sandborn moved to second base and Laynie Meredith was safe at first base on a grounder to the pitcher’s circle.

Tori Sandborn took third base and Laynie Meredith went to second base on a wild pitch. Rylee Scheurer doubled to deep centerfield to drive in Tori Sandborn and Laynie Meredith. Lauren Martin got the third Shamrock out on a grounder to second base.

After five innings, St. Patrick had a 9-5 lead.

Lauren Martin walked to lead off the sixth inning for P-W. She advanced to second base when Evie Smith was safe at first on an error. Halie Myers hit a popup to the pitcher that was dropped. In the confusion, Lauren Martin was forced out at third base and Evie Smith was forced out at second base. Halie Myers was safe at first. Carly Scheurer retired the final batter of the inning on a fielder’s choice grounder to the shortstop.

Lydia Meredith was hit by a pitch to lead off the sixth inning for the Shamrocks. Emma Honsowitz was safe at first base and Lydia Meredith was out at second base on a fielder’s choice grounder to second base. Mara Schrauben doubled down the left field line to drive Emma Honsowitz to third base. P-W shortstop Brooke Kramer made a great play on Addie Scheurer’s sacrifice fly to centerfield. Emma Honsowitz was able to score and Mara Schrauben took third base on the play. Lauren Martin retired the next batter on a fly to right field to end the inning.

In the top of the seventh inning, Rylee Scheurer retired the Pirate leadoff batter on a ground ball to the shortstop. Shamrock leftfielder Tori Sandborn ranged into left center and went back to snare Brooke Spitzley’s drive to the outfield. Natalee Teachworth made a great running catch on a foul popup to first base to end the final inning.

Portland St. Patrick won the game 10-5.

Brooke Kramer had a homerun, two singles and an RBI for Pewamo-Westphalia. Carli Huhn had a double, a single and three RBI. Broke Spitzley and Brynn Bauer each had two singles. Jenna Pung had a single for P-W as well.

Rylee Scheurer had two doubles, a single and four RBI for St. Patrick. Tori Sandborn had three singles and one RBI. Carly Scheurer had two singles and three RBI. Mara Schrauben had a double and Natalee Teachworth had a single.

Carly Scheurer pitched the complete game and was the winning pitcher for the Shamrocks.
