Fowler vs. Carson City-Crystal – – MHSAA District Semifinal – – The Bleacher Denizen – – June 3, 2022 – – by Chuck Krafft

Today, your Bleacher Denizen is up in Carson City to write up the three games in the softball district. In this first game, Carson City-Crystal (CCC) will play against Fowler.

Here are the starting lineups. CCC will bat first. Fowler will be the home team.

It is now time to review the events of the game through the eyes of an ancient Bleacher Denizen. He did not play high school baseball; when the Bleacher Denizen suggested that his fastest gear was an accelerated mosey, his coach was unfortunately not amused.

Calli Heleski walked to lead off the game for CCC. Fowler Pitcher Anna Andros struck out the next hitter. Calli Heleski stole second; when she tried to advance to third on an overthrow, Fowler Rightfielder Quinn Watts got the ball back to the infield quickly to throw the runner out at third base. Ella Hagerman lined a single to center field. Anna Andros struck out the next CCC batter to end the inning.

Avery Koenigsknecht walked to lead off the first inning for Fowler. Avery Koenigsknecht stole second base. When Grace Piggott drew a walk, Avery Koenigsknecht stole third base on ball four. Grace Piggott stole second base. Paisley Hansen doubled to left field to drive in Avery Koenigsknecht as Grace Piggott advanced to third base. Grace Piggott scored and Paisley Hansen went to third base on a wild pitch. Carly Andros boomed a triple to deep center-left field to drive in Paisley Hansen.

Bri Halfmann drew a walk and stole second base. Anna Andros singled to right-center field to drive in Carly Andros and Bri Halfmann. Anna Andros stole second base and advanced to third base on a fly out to center field by Faith Boyd. CCC Pitcher Haeven Clark struck out the next batter. Anna Andros scored on a passed ball. Kaitlyn Austin struck out the next batter to end the inning.

Fowler scored six runs in the top of the first inning to take a 6-0 lead.

In the top of the second inning, Anna Andros retired the three CCC hitters on two strikeouts and a grounder to the shortstop.

Haeven Clark struck out the Fowler lead off batter in the bottom of the second inning. Grace Piggott hit a bunt single; she advanced to third base on throwing error and scored on Paisley Hansen’s groundout to the shortstop. Carly Andros drew a walk. Haeven Clark retired the next Fowler hitter on a bounder to third base.

Fowler scored one run in the top of the second inning to boost its lead to 7-0.

Anna Andros struck out the CCC third inning leadoff hitter and retired the next batter on a fly to right field. Calli Heleski dropped a single over third base. Anna Andros struck out the next hitter to end the inning.

Anna Andros walked to lead off the bottom of the third inning for Fowler. She took second base when Faith Boyd singled off the shortstop’s glove. Anna Andros tagged up and advanced to third base on Chloe Feldpausch’ fly to centerfield. Faith Boyd stole second base. Makenna Smith’s bunt single drove Anna Andros in and moved Faith Boyd to third base. Makenna Smith stole second base.

Faith Boyd scored and Makenna Smith took third base when Avery Koenigsknecht was safe on an error. Avery Koenigsknecht stole second base. Grace Piggott walked. Paisley Hansen doubled to left field to drive in Makenna Smith and Avery Koenigsknecht. Haeven Clark struck out the next two batters to end the inning.

Fowler scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning to lift its lead to 11-0.

Anna Andros retired the CCC fourth inning leadoff batter on a groundout to second base. Jenna Berry beat out an infield single. Anna Andros struck out the next batter. Kaylee Byrnes drew a walk and Jenna Berry moved up to second base. Sydni Bentley entered the game as a pinch runner. CCC made its third out on a grounder to the pitcher.

Anna Andros singled to left field to open the bottom of the fourth inning for Fowler; she took second base on a throwing error. Haeven Clark retired the next two hitters on a popup to the pitcher and a squib to the catcher that sent Anna Andros to third base. Makenna Smith singled to drive in Anna Andros. The next Fowler hitter was out on a popup to second base.

Fowler scored one run in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend their lead to 12-0.

Anna Andros struck out all three CCC batters in the top of the fifth inning.

Fowler won the game 12-0 because of the mercy rule and will play in this afternoon’s district final.

Calli Heleski, Ella Hagerman and Jenna Berry each had a single for CCC.

Paisley Hansen had two doubles and four RBI for Fowler. Carly Andros had a triple and one RBI. Anna Andros and Makenna Smith each had two singles and two RBI. Grace Piggott and Faith Boyd each had a single. Avery Koenigsknecht had one RBI.
