Dansville at Portland St. Patrick – – Softball Doubleheader – – Second Game – – May 4, 2023 – – by Chuck Krafft

The Shamrocks from St. Patrick and the Aggies from Dansville are playing a softball doubleheader and it’s time for the second game. Here is a link to the play by play of the first game.

They had a taco truck at the Shamrock baseball and softball fields today as a fund raiser. I grabbed a couple of “Maria’s Tacos”! They were pretty good and kept me fueled up.

In this second game, even though we are playing in Portland, Dansville will be the home team and bat last. This is a lot for a mere Bleacher Denizen to comprehend, but I guess I’ll try to flow with it!!

It is now time to review the events of this game through the perspective of an Aging Bleacher Denizen whose softball career was severely hampered when the powers that be refused to allow him to use a jet pack so he could run the bases as fast as possible.

Rylee Scheurer walked to lead off the game for the Shamrocks. Gracelyn Rockey doubled to the center field fence to send Rylee Scheurer to third base. Rylee Scheurer scored and Gracelyn Rockey took third base on an RBI groundout to the pitcher by Emma Honsowitz. Gracelyn Rockey boldly went all the way home from second base on the play. The next hitter was out on a popup to third base.

Tori Sandborn singled to right field. Kyra Kinsman came in as a courtesy runner for Tori Sandborn. Natalee Teachworth singled to left field and Kyra Kinsman moved to second base. Mattie Honsowitz lined a single to center field. Kyra Kinsman scored and Natalee Teachworth took second base. Natalee Teachworth advanced to third base and Mattie Honsowitz to second base on a wild pitch. Hannah Weller singled to drive in Natalee Teachworth and Mattie Honsowitz. Chloe Moore retired the next Shamrock hitter on a fly to left field to end the inning.

St. Patrick scored five runs in the top of the first inning to take a 5-0 lead.

Sarah Hawkins walked to lead off the bottom of the first inning for Dansville. She advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Tori Sandborn struck out the next Aggie hitter. Maddie Springsted lined a single to send Sarah Hawkins to third base; when an error was made on a throw, Sarah Hawkins scored and Maddy Springsted advanced to second base. Tori Sandborn struck out the next two Aggie batters to end the inning.

Dansville scored one run in the bottom of the first inning to trim the St. Patrick lead to 5-1.

Rylee Scheurer beat out an infield single to lead off the top of the second inning for St. Patrick; she then stole second base. Gracelyn Rockey belted a home run over the left field fence to drive in Rylee Scheurer. Emma Honsowitz singled down the third base line and went to second base on a wild pitch. Emma Honsowitz took third base on Addie Scheurer’s bunt single; she scored on an error as Addie Scheurer stayed at first base. Tori Sandborn walked and Addie Scheurer moved to second base.

Kyra Kinsman came in to run for Tori Sandborn. Addie Scheurer took third base and Kyra Kinsman second base on a sacrifice bunt by Natalee Teachworth. Chloe Moore struck out the next Shamrock hitter. Addie Scheurer scored and Kyra Kinsman advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Hannah Weller singled to drive in Kyra Kinsman. Chloe Moore knocked down a liner to the pitcher’s circle and threw to third base to record the inning’s third out.

St. Patrick scored five runs in the top of the second inning to take a 10-1 lead.

Marleana Farr singled to left field to open the second inning for Dansville; she took second base on a wild pitch. Marleana Farr advanced to third base on a groundout to second base by Hope Service. Bree DeLano walked. Bree DeLano stole second base; when the runner on third base broke for home, Shamrock Shortstop Gracelyn Rockey fired a strike to home plate to cut down the runner. Tori Sandborn struck out the next Aggie batter to hold Dansville scoreless for the second inning.

Dansville Second Baseman Maddy Springsted deftly handled a ground ball to second base and quickly threw to first base to retire the speedy Rylee Scheurer to open the third inning. (Rylee Scheurer is one of the fastest softball players in the Lansing area; she also excels at sprint events in track. It is rare for any infielder to ever throw her out on a ground ball.)

Gracelyn Rockey singled to left field and advanced to second base on a single to left field by Emma Honsowitz. Gracelyn Rockey went to third base and Emma Honsowitz to second base on a fly out to center field by Addie Scheurer. Chloe Moore got the next Shamrock hitter to pop up to third base to end the inning.

Kyra Kinsman went in to play right field for St. Patrick.

Tori Sandborn retired the Aggie third inning leadoff batter on a popup to third base. Gracie Taylor lined a single to center field. Tori Sandborn got the next two Aggie batters out on a foul popup to the catcher and another popup to third base.

After three innings, St. Patrick had a 10-1 lead.

Chloe Moore retired the three Shamrock fourth inning hitters on a fly to deep right field where Margo Kuznicki made a nice catch, a grounder to shortstop and a more routine fly to right field.

Hannah Weller went in to play left field for St. Patrick.

Tori Sandborn retired the three Dansville fourth inning hitters on a fly to left field, a groundout to shortstop and a groundout to third base.

Laynie Meredith tripled to the left field fence to lead off the fifth inning for the Shamrocks. She scored on Rylee Scheurer’s sacrifice fly to right field. Gracelyn Rockey singled to left field. Emma Honsowitz lined out to Dansville Shortstop Sarah Hawkins, who quickly threw to first base to double off the runner and end the inning.

St. Patrick scored one run in the top of the fifth inning to take an 11-1 lead.

Tori Sandborn retired the first two Aggie hitters in the bottom of the fifth inning on a fly to center field and a groundout to third base. Sarah Hawkins hit a sharp liner for a single to left field. Tori Sandborn retired the next Aggie hitter on a fly to center field.

As St. Patrick had an 11-1 lead after five full innings, the mercy rule was invoked and the game ended.

Sarah Hawkins, Gracie Taylor, Maddy Springsted and Marleana Farr each had a single for Dansville.

Chloe Moore pitched the complete game for the Aggies.

Gracelyn Rockey had a home run, a double, two singles and three RBI for St. Patrick. Hannah Weller had two singles and three RBI. Emma Honsowitz had two singles and one RBI. Laynie Meredith had a triple. Rylee Scheurer and Mattie Honsowitz each had a single and one RBI. Addie Scheurer, Tori Sandborn and Natalee Teachworth each had a single as every Shamrock player who batted had at least one hit.

Tori Sandborn pitched the entire five inning game for the Shamrocks. She gave up one run and struck out four batters.
