Dansville at Portland St. Patrick – – Softball Doubleheader – – First Game – – The Bleacher Denizen – – May 4, 2023 – – by Chuck Krafft

After taking a few days off because of cold, rainy weather, your Bleacher Denizen is ready to continue his journey blogging baseball and softball games. (I really need to learn what it will take where the journey naming powers that be will permit me to refer to my travels as an odyssey. I figure that it would add a bit of gravitas to the blog! If only I could get the powers that be to issue a ruling – – – – )

Today the Aggies from Dansville are at Portland St. Patrick to play a doubleheader with the Shamrocks.

Sarah Hawkins led off the game for Dansville with a walk. Kourtney Mack doubled to deep left field to send Sarah Hawkins to third base. Gracie Taylor doubled to left center field to drive in Sarah Hawkins and Kourtney Mack. Gracie Taylor advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Maddy Springsted walked; ball four was a wild pitch and Gracie Taylor scored. St. Patrick Catcher Hayley Fleischer caught the Dansville runner off first base to record the first out of the inning.

Chloe Moore walked. Mattie Honsowitz struck out the next two Aggie hitters to end the inning.

Dansville scored three runs in the top of the first inning to take a 3-0 lead.

Rylee Scheurer walked to lead off the bottom of the first inning for St. Patrick and stole second base. Emily Tringal retired the next three Shamrock batters on a fly to center field where Center Fielder Kourtney Mack made a nice running catch coming in the ball, a foul fly to left field where Halle Service made an excellent running catch and a grounder to shortstop.

Mattie Honsowitz struck out the Aggie leadoff batter in the top of the second inning. Emily Tringal walked. Sarah Hawkins doubled to move Emily Tringal to third base. Emily Tringal scored and Sarah Hawkins advanced to third base on a sacrifice fly to left field by Kourtney Mack. Sarah Hawkins scored on a wild pitch. Gracie Taylor was hit by a pitch and stole second base when the Shamrocks attempted to pick her off.

Natalee Teachworth took over in the pitcher’s circle and Mattie Honsowitz moved to first base.

Natalee Teachworth picked the runner off second base to end the inning.

Dansville scored two runs in the top of the second inning to take a 5-0 lead.

Tori Sandborn singled to open the bottom of the second inning for St. Patrick. She advanced to second base on a wild pitch and scored when Natalee Teachworth grounded a single to right field. Kyra Kinsman came in as a courtesy runner for Natalee Teachworth. Mattie Honsowitz walked and Kyra Kinsman went to second base. Hannah Weller singled up the middle. Kyra Kinsman went to third base and Mattie Honsowitz took second base. Kyra Kinsman scored, Mattie Honsowitz went to third base and Hannah Weller to second on a sacrifice fly by Laynie Meredith.

Rylee Scheurer lined a single to right field to drive in Mattie Honsowitz and Hannah Weller; she stole second base. Gracelyn Rockey (an eighth grader) belted a home run over the left field fence; she and Rylee Scheurer both scored. Emily Tringal retired the next Shamrock batter on a grounder to third base. Addie Scheurer lined a single to left field. Emily Tringal retired the next Shamrock hitter on a grounder to shortstop to end the inning.

St. Patrick scored six runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 6-5 lead.

Natalee Teachworth retired the three Aggie third inning batters on a fly to the shortstop and two strikeouts.

Emily Tringal retired the Shamrock leadoff batter in the top of the third inning on a fly to left field. Mattie Honsowitz walked. The next Shamrock batter was out on a fly to second base. Mattie Honsowitz stole second base. Laynie Meredith lined the ball past the diving Aggie left fielder. The ball got all the way to the fence. Mattie Honsowitz scored and Laynie Meredith recorded an inside-the-park home run.

Rylee Scheurer singled to center field and took third base on a single by Gracelyn Rockey, who advanced to second base on a throw to third base. Emma Honsowitz doubled to the center field fence to drive in Rylee Scheurer and Gracelyn Rockey. Emma Honsowitz stole third base and scored when Addie Scheurer was safe at first on an RBI bunt single. Emily Tringal got the next batter to fly out to center field to retire the side.

St. Patrick scored five runs in the bottom of the third inning to push their lead to 11-5.

Natalee Teachworth reacted quickly to throw out Dansville’s fourth inning leadoff batter on a squib that died near home plate. Bree Delano walked.

The Honsowitz connection of sisters Emma and Mattie made an excellent play on a grounder between first and second base by Emily Tringal. First Baseman Mattie Honsowitz had to leave the bag to keep the grounder in the infield; Second Baseman Emma Honsowitz alertly covered first base so that Mattie could throw the batter out. Bree Delano advanced to second base on the play. Sarah Hawkins walked. Natalee Teachworth struck out the next batter to hold the Aggies scoreless for the inning.

Natalee Teachworth and Mattie Honsowitz walked to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning for St. Patrick. Kyra Kinsman entered the game as a courtesy runner for Natalee Teachworth. Kyra Kinsman took third base and Mattie Honsowitz second on a groundout to third base by Hannah Weller. Laynie Meredith lined a single to right field. Kyra Kinsman scored and Mattie Honsowitz advanced to third base. After Laynie Meredith stole second base, Rylee Scheurer belted a triple to right field to drive in Mattie Honsowitz and Laynie Meredith.

Dansville Second Baseman Maddy Springsted made a great backhanded grab of a fly off the bat of Gracelyn Rockey to record the second Shamrock out of the inning. The speedy Rylee Scheurer bolted home from third base to turn this into a sacrifice fly. St. Patrick made the third out of the inning on a grounder to the shortstop.

St. Patrick scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend its lead to 15-5.

Natalee Teachworth retired the first Aggie batter in the top of the fifth inning on a bouncer to third base. Maddy Springsted singled up the middle and stole second base; she advanced to third base on a groundout to third base by Chloe Moore. Halle Service singled to drive in Maddy Springsted. Natalee Teachworth struck out the next batter to end the inning.

Dansville scored one run in the top of the fifth inning to trim the St. Patrick lead to 15-6.

Addie Scheurer walked to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning for St. Patrick. Tori Sandborn singled to left field and Addie Scheurer advanced to second base. Natalee Teachworth walked to load the bases. Mattie Honsowitz singled to left field; it could probably have been for extra bases, but because St. Patrick just needed one run to win the game by the Mercy Rule, she was just credited with a single as Addie Scheurer scored the winning run.

St. Patrick won the game 16-6 as the Mercy Rule was applied.

Gracie Taylor had a double and two RBI for Dansville. Kourtney had a double and one RBI. Sarah Hawkins had a double. Halle Service had a single and one RBI. Maddy Springsted had a single.

Emily Tringal pitched a complete game for the Aggies.

Gracelyn Rockey and Laynie Meredith each had a home run, a single and three RBI for St. Patrick. Rylee Scheurer had a triple, two singles and three RBI. Tori Sandborn had three singles and one RBI. Emma Honsowitz had a double and two RBI. Mattie Honsowitz had a single and one RBI. Addie Scheurer, Natalee Teachworth and Hannah Weller each had a single as everyone who batted for St. Patrick had at least one hit.

Natalee Teachworth pitched the final three and a third innings for St. Patrick. She struck out four hitters and allowed only one run.
