St. Charles at Breckenridge – – Eight Man Football – – The Bleacher Denizen – – September 29, 2023 – – by Chuck Krafft
In this You Tube video of the Red River Valley, I tell my listeners that you never know where the Red River Valley will lead you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w03AhhNk1M8
Unfortunately, one place where it does not lead is Breckenridge High School. Fortunately, however, M-46 does lead there (with a slight detour on Wright St.) In a confusing moment, I actually had to turn left on Wright St. to get to Breckenridge High. While this taxed your aging Bleacher Denizen’s cognitive skills to the max, fortunately, he was able to pull off the turn and get to the high school after he waited about 20 minutes for the homecoming parade to pass him. Everyone seemed like they had a great time at the parade.
Tonight, your Bleacher Denizen’s football journey takes him up north (from Lansing, where I live) to Breckenridge, where the Huskies will host the Bulldogs from St. Charles in their Homecoming Football game! (Some day, I hope to learn how to obtain the magic gravitas that would allow me to refer to my journeys as “odysseys”, but that is a story for another article.) (And I almost wrenched my shoulder while patting myself on the back for avoiding any Huskie vs. Bulldog dog jokes.)
I experienced a first at the homecoming. The Breckenridge FFA was serving home made bean soup at the game. It was really a refreshing change to my Friday diet. (Your Bleacher Denizen ends up eating too many hot dogs – – -) The soup was great and much healthier than my usual game day food!
Three singers from the Breckenridge choir, Ava Brzak, Elarae Carey and Leah Wale did a beautiful job singing the National Anthem. As your Bleacher Denizen is also a musician, he always enjoys extending kudos to students for a musical job well-done!!
It is now time to watch the game and record its events through the aging eyes of a sedentary Bleacher Denizen whose football career was ruined when his coach refused to allow him to quarterback the team while lying on his couch.

The band opened with Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond and moved on to the Huskie fight song. The band did a wonderful job!!
For those of you who were not able to hear the halftime show, I hope you will enjoy this 1950s rendition of “Glow Worm” from my You Tube Channel!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbyez-hYtDY
Then it was time to announce the Homecoming Court and to name Isaac Humm as Homecoming King and Megan Goward as Homecoming Queen! Congratulations to Mr. Humm and Ms. Goward!!
It was time to being the third quarter. As I predicted, St. Charles does have a 36-34 lead. (For a small fee, I can use those magical powers to predict the next lotto numbers; I do confess that few (okay, no) people have taken me up on that. I guess if I want to earn “fees” I may need to predict something a bit more earth-shaking.)
